Standing Strong Together

--by TC, posted Jul 17, 2022

For many years there has been a standing yoga pose that has been and continues to be one of my favourites. It incorporates balance, trust and support. Each time I have participated in this practice I have felt a deep sense of connection with all those in the group. And it makes me smile.

Instead of standing alone, the class stands in a circle close enough for us to hold hands, left palms up, right palms down, each of us giving and receiving.

As a unit we shift our weight to one foot, picking up the other foot and resting the heel against our ankle or calf muscle. Slowly we change the hand position so that we are palm to palm.

We raise our arms creating a crown of hands above our heads respecting the reach of the person on either side of us.

A gentle sway may start and soon we realize we have the support of each person in the circle, trusting them to protect us from falling. We feel a sense of security, closing our eyes knowing we are safe. In time we return to standing on two feet before shifting to balancing on the other foot.

As we finish there is a moment of silence for us to absorb the love and support we have received. Balance with support. Standing strong together in community. So much better than standing alone. Picture taken and written by T.C.

The word 'Yoga' is derived from the Sanskrit root 'Yuj', meaning 'to join' or 'to yoke' or 'to unite'. As per Yogic scriptures the practice of Yoga leads to the union of individual consciousness with that of the Universal Consciousness, indicating a perfect harmony between the mind and body, Man & Nature --from internet

We all know that Yoga consists of Eight parts. Yogasana (Exercise) is one of them.

Thanks for the beautiful post.
