The People We MetI

The People We Met
I would be remiss if I did not write about the incredible people we met in Thailand. The staff at the hotels we stayed in went out of their way to make us feel welcome. It could be argued that they were just doing their jobs, but this is not how it felt to us. At the iuDia Hotel in Ayutthaya they staff went above and beyond what we would have expected. The dining room was not open in the evening and when we asked where we could get a takeaway meal the front desk clerk walked us to the nearby restaurant. She indicated that the hotel staff would provide us with plates and cutlery once we returned. Not only did they provided what we needed they put our food in servicing bowls and took care of the clean up while we slept. We were grateful and deeply touched by their kindness and care.
For the rest of our visit to Thailand we stayed at the Novotel in Rangsit. Since we were there for an extended period of time we became acquainted with a few of the staff. They paid attention to our needs and did their best to ensure our stay was a pleasant one. They also were happy to stop and chat with us, asking questions about out stay, what we had done that day, recommending things for us to do and sharing parts of their personal lives with us. Again, it may be said that their friendliness was part of their job but somehow, I do not feel that is the case. It felt natural, open and honest and I would like to think that they enjoyed our conversations as much as we enjoyed theirs.
On one of our walks my brother and I were offered bottles of fresh water by one of the locals. She felt that we needed it and did not want to take payment for the two bottles she offered. She finally agreed to take 10 Thai bahts, instead we gave her 20. I indicated that should share with the man behind the counter and my brother teased her and said to forget about the man and put the 20 bahts in her own pocket. We all laughed and sharing a moment of comradery that still warms my heart.
Our experiences were a reminder to be open, willing to interact with strangers and to share parts of ourselves with them as well. A lesson worth learning and remembering. Picture taken and written by TC.
