Stories of Kindness from Around the World

The More I Help, The Lighter My Heart Feels

--by luckyman, posted Aug 11, 2010

This morning I got up early and went for a walk at 5 a.m. to the teashop. I was wondering whether I could do an act of kindness and immediately an opportunity was presented.

An old, poor gentleman arrived at the teashop on his bicycle and I seized the moment to offer him a cup of tea. He was happy and that act made me feel happy.

As  I was walking back, I helped a family to reach the right bus stop so that they can reach the main bus stand at Koyambedu. They too were thankful.

And then I was off to go help a family of four to pay the rent. The family consists of  a widow, her daughter (18 years old), son (19), and her husband's brother. Yesterday I heard my inner voice asking me to help them pay the rent. By the way this family lives in a slum.   In order to help this family I need to forego at least one meal a day. No choice for the time being. It is a strain to help people but then it also makes me feel wonderful.

I am feeding my soul through these acts. Funnily, the more I help, the less burdened I feel.  My heart, which is mostly heavy, feels lighter through all these random acts of kindness. So a sort of selfishness is involved in helping others.

It is indeed a wonderful life.

His example reminded me of your story. He said for example if one were to go on a diet-give up sweets for Lent that passing it on would be taking the $3-$6 an dessert out would cost and donating it to someone need.

Thank you for your service to others :-)
