Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Caring Enough to Help a Stranger

--by emmanuelle, posted Jan 4, 2011

I remember an incident from when I was visiting the USA. I was in Los Angeles in a big store. Everyone was busily buzzing around like bees doing their errands and no one really paid attention to the other people around them.

As I was going around this big shop, I saw a woman standing. She seemed to be in real pain. She was holding on to her belly and everyone around her passed her by without even noticing.

I walked up to her and asked her what was wrong but she didn't know. I tried to spot a chair or anything she could sit on and helped her walk to it. Trying to get someone from the shop so we could call for some help was not easy thing to do as no one seemed to care. Finally, I got mad and demanded that someone called an ambulance and finally they did it. All along this woman was thanking me. But honestly I thought it was only natural to help someone in dire straits and made me ponder - how much indifference can we put up with?

Acting kind is no big deal if you see other people as an extension of you. You could be them and they could be you.  Nothing separates the hearts just the illusion of the minds.

I truly pray for a better world and I hope there will come a day when human beings will truly be brothers and sisters and care for one another regardless their wealth, colour, religion or age.

My mom brought up the idea of a website in which people who were seeking an opportunity to help a stranger would be able to anonymously donate 5 bucks solely for the purpose of giving to a stranger. It would also be a sort of report on the simple generosity of our country. While we would be the first beneficiaries, we would use any excess to help others who are struggling and write in for help. Not a reality, but i just wanted to see how many of you would see that idea for what it is and not jump to the assumption that its a scam. My mom and i are trying to settle a disagreement on the matter. I think america is too skeptical for something of that magnitude while she thinks there are still some pure givers in this country.

Our deeds should be based on our being. I pray that your is filled with compassion and joy.

Thank you for helping that lady in pain.
emmanuelle wrote: thank you sabrina for being a real human being and to care. Since I found this website I feel that our world is brighter than we think. We have so many bad news every day, so much violence but the media could also point out all the good things that anonymous persons do for other people; it would surely help to keep faith and hope.
