Stories of Kindness from Around the World

A Boot Full of Kindness

--by MalaCzarna, posted Mar 1, 2011

My girlfriend and I went to a supermarket called Tesco.  It is a very big shop here in Poland, something like a Walmart for those in the states.

Whilst we were there, a homeless man walked in wearing the most tattered clothes and very dirty.  He was using an old vacuum cleaner pole as a stick to carry his life's possessions.  He really was a mess and his face was as dirty as a chimney sweep's.

My girlfriend was looking through some clothes and I was wandering around the shoe section, and to be honest, curiously staring as this dirty old frail man who was sizing up some shoes.  Now, anyone in their right mind would wonder, does this guy have the money to buy a new pair of shoes? Security had their eye on him, as I did.

I went to find my girlfriend and told her, if that guy doesn't get a pair of shoes, we're buying him a pair.  She said, 'ok'.

After some time he approached the line, about the same time we did, and he had a pair of 'tights' (to keep warm, it is -20c today, this was a few days ago) and a pair of tennis shoes?!  Ya, the cheapest pair of tennis shoes you could find and there is about 30cm of snow on the ground.

I immediately told him that we wanted to buy those for him, but not those shoes... he needed something warm. I took him back to the shoes and he said I could buy him this other pair, but he was still buying the tennis shoes. He pointed out a size 48boot.  He was holding a size 42 tennis shoe.  I tried to get him to try some on but he knew exactly what he needed...a size 42 tennis shoe and a size 48 boot.  So he could wear both at the same time.  I was  little confused but that's what he wanted so that's what he got.

I imagine that if the weather in Poland is as cold as in the UK lately he might be right wearing two pairs of shoes, the question is, how comfortable is to walk around with such big feet? What really matters is that you made him happy. Love and Light, Bluebell
