Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Finding My First Smile (Card) This Week

--by misschievious, posted Jun 15, 2011

It was a Wednesday night, four days after my grandfathers birthday which he was not able to celebrate since he had died five days before. I was struggling with his death and was acting like he wasn't even gone. In addition to that, I was having a hard time because I was missing my sister who had been living with me until a month ago, before she decided to move in with her father. At first I was okay with the decision because she was a pain but soon after I missed her.

This wednesday happened to be the Wednesday when I started a new job and I had been texting my sister about it. She called me a little bit before work and sounded really upset, she said she had gotten off the phone with our grandma and that I needed to call her. I had been avoiding it. I hadn't called my grandma since my grandpa died and I knew I needed to. The phone call was the worst ever, I cried and cried. I found out my gradnpa's funeral wasn't even recorded with video or photo's and I was crushed. The distance and having an infant made it impossible for me to leave my Wisconsin home and attend my grandfathers funeral in Florida. The phone call ended about 3 hours before I needed to be to work and I could hardly talk.

I was trying my hardest to just forget about it and go on with my routine. I gave my daughter a bath and during bath time I broke down. I was balling like a baby, sitting on the toilet seat all alone. The pressures of starting a new job, missing my sister and my grandfathers loss were weighing down on me. After my daughter was done in her bath I noticed there was a business card sitting on my wallet. I thought my boyfriend was back and had set it there but when I read the card, it was a Smile Card.

I opened my door to see if the person who left it was still there and there was no one. I don't know who left the Smile Card but whoever did put a smile on my face for the first time that week. I still have the card in my wallet and I am waiting until I find someone who looks like they need it. These cards are the best! And they really do make you smile :) I am so happy I discovered this website, I hope others are inspired by these stories and do some random acts of  kindness too. And I hope to print off some cards of my own to leave for  others who are in need of a pick me up!

I had a similar issue when I lost my brother 4 years back ... Everything came to a stand still but today as I look back, I saw the reason, the purpose and I realized my brother still lives in a way which has made me peaceful ... which has made me look up in my life and move forward ... In your case, I feel the best gift was the smile card ... exchanged with no words, the joy you express here seems priceless ... May you envision a positive life ahead for your grand mother, sister and your own lil family ... I was taught to do this and it does help me move forward in a specific path ... May Lord rest your grandfather's soul in peace. Warm hugs, Deeper.
