Company of a Stranger On The Dangerous Walk Home

When I was a little girl my family lived in what is now part of a forest preserve.

Our bus stop was about a mile from our house and in the afternoons we often walked home through the woods or down the highway. The woods were safer but in the winter the build up of snow made the trek very difficult. So, I often had no option but to walk the desolate stretch of highway that ran by our long driveway.

When I was in high school I took the highway home one winter's day and a man drove by. Now it wasn't unusual for all manner of creeps to bother me as I walked and I always felt very tense when I had to do it.

Instantly I knew this man was trouble! I pretended to look straight ahead. He drove down the highway, turned around drove past me again. Then he turned again and drove along beside me, very slowly. He just keep staring at me with this weird  blank look on his face and, even though I tried to hide it, I was very frightened!

I prayed for God to help me as I continued down the road.

He'd been crawling along beside me for several minutes when a lady drove by. I saw her head swivel around as she took in the situation and I saw her expression of concern. My heart jumped with hope - but then she drove on by!

To my relief she turned around and came back.

She rolled down her window and called out to me, "Do you know that man?" I shook my head and I'm sure she could see the fear in my face. I could tell she wanted me to get into her car but she must have realized that I didn't know her either.

"I'm going to drive along beside you until you get home," she said. "Okay? That way Mr. Man over here won't be able to bother you."

I thanked her and kept walking towards home. Seeing this woman staying beside me made the creep in the other car put his foot down and he drove away. The lady stayed beside me, talking to me out the car window, until I turned up our driveway.

Whoever she was I sure was grateful that she came along and protected me. If she's still on the earth I'm sure she's an elderly lady now but wherever you are, whoever you are, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
