Stories of Kindness from Around the World

The Smile Project

--by lindaavonne, posted Nov 22, 2011

In celebration of Random Acts of Kindness week, I started a project with my preschool class.  I made a smiley face recognition certificate called it a Smile O Gram.  I made copies of it for each of my 17 preschoolers.  I decorated regular business size envelopes with smiley face stickers and wrote on the front : A Smile especially for You!

The parents were to talk with their preschooler about who they wanted to send a Smile Gram to.

I talked with our local flower shop about the possibility of getting smiley face latex balloons.  Unfortunately the flu bug has hit our community and a lot of children have been gone from school so as of today we've only gotten 9 of them delivered.  We still plan on sending out another 10.

Inside the envelope, in addition to the SMILE Gram was a smile card and a paper that said "Tag, You're it!" and explained our project.  It told how we were sending out 18 SMILES, and wanted everyone to turn around and send a SMILE to someone else.  It pointed out that in 20 days we could send 360 SMILES!

We set up a blog for recipients and senders to comment with stories. http://thesmileprojectrak.blogspot.com/  We even included a link to www.helpothers.org crediting you with the Smile cards and ideas for Random Acts of Kindness.

I am really excited about this project and really hope it catches on and people will pay it forward.  I may even send out some more just because it feels good!
