A Card For A Stranger

--by madeusmile, posted Nov 24, 2011

The mother of a friend of mine was in the hospital undergoing treatment for a serious illness.  Initally, we didn't know just how serious it would be, but we soon learned that she would be hospitalized for at least 3 months before getting to go home... assuming she survived the illness and treatments.

I posted her mother's hospital room's mailing address above my desk and made sure to drop her a card or uplifting note every few days.  Sadly, her mother did not survive the treatments and passed away during her stay at the hospital.  I just couldn't bring myself to throw out her room's address.  Each time it caught my eye I would say a quick prayer for strength for those who were mourning her death.  I never even met this dear lady... but it didn't matter... she was loved by someone that I loved... and that was enough.

Her address was still posted there 8 months or so after her passing... and still I didn't feel right about tossing it out.  I couldn't really figure out why I kept leaving it posted.  Finally, one day it came to me.  SEND CARDS!  Just because she's no longer in that room doesn't mean that someone else who is now in that room might not need something to lift their spirits.  Someone in that room might feel alone.  Someone in that room might gain strength from a card from a total stranger.

I sat down and designed a card and printed off several to keep on hand.   Just something letting them know that someone is saying a prayer for them today... simply because they are in a room that holds a special place in my heart.  I didn't tell them that my friend's mother passed away... because I didn't want them to dwell on anything but the positive.

So every week or so I plan to drop a card in the mail to Room #3301... with a prayer and the hope for better days ahead.

There were fabric pieces and old clothes, and a hairbrush on which the home staff had labeled her name. I liked the brush and i kept it, always meaning to remove the tag. Then she passed on, which was hard on my friend, so i keep the theresa label on the brush to think about my friend whenever i see it.
