Stories of Kindness from Around the World

An Award For The Janitor

--by hinashah4, posted Oct 30, 2012

Recently, I spent two months at a guesthousefor work purpose. One day I encountered a very unique and honest janitor at the guesthouse. Below is the e-mail I wrote to the Human Resources Department regarding the incident.

Hi HR-Person,

Can I request that you forward this to the department concerned with housekeeping?

I want to highlight one of the best experiences I have had at your organization to date. It might come as a surprise, but this experience was with one of your janitors [insert Janitor's name] (I really hope I have his name correct, please correct me if I dont have the name right.)

He was suppose to help me exchange rooms within the guesthouse. He was very sincere and dedicated to his job. After the shifting was complete I offered him a tip. His reply was what impressed me the most. He said, "No ma'am, we get paid." I mention that I was offering this only because I wanted to show my appreciation for his help. However, he totally refused to take the money. Then, I went on to offer him some dried-fruits instead. He said he just had dinner and refused that too. On my insisting, he finally took a few pieces.

I thought it was totally worth sharing this experience with you to let you know the precious people you have working for you.

You might think it a small incident. However, it truly touched me. I learned a lot today and I definitely have developed a very high respect for him. This experience not only made my day but also reminded me of some basic values!

I believe that these small experiences truly make great memories of a place, and this one will always be very special in my memories of the organization.

Regards.

And, guess what! The HR ensured that the janitor was appreciated with an award/certificate in the next quarter. I was so delighted to hear that I was able to get someone's good work appreciated in a way that would benefit him!
