Stories of Kindness from Around the World

A Motherly Connection

The other day, I was at the library.

It happened to be closing early that day, and just before it closed, a mother walked in with her child. She hadn't realized that the library was closing early, and was very disappointed. She told me that she had taken a bus with her son, and it had taken them a very long time to get to the library. The little boy was downcast as well.

I suggested that she take her son to the mall, which was maybe a mile from the library. Then I drove away.

Once I exited the parking lot, though, I found her walking slowly with her son towards the mall. It was not the safest place to pull over, because of heavy traffic and I had a car full of people, but I just couldn't resist the urge to give this lady and her son a ride!

So I pulled over anyway and waved to her amidst the other drivers honking at me from behind. We quickly put my kids on my parents' laps (my parents were visiting me from India), and then accommodated this lady and her son.

After everyone had settled into the car, I drove to the mall and told the mother about all the fun stuff she could do there. She was very happy, as she was new to the area, and was glad to get some help.

I told her that, being a mom myself, I've also experienced the struggle to keep my kids entertained while I stayed home with no car. So I totally understood how she felt.

We dropped the mother and her son off at the mall, and I returned home with my family and a big smile on my face that day!
