Stories of Kindness from Around the World

God's Little Blessing Has A Breakdown

--by kissmonster802, posted Feb 8, 2013

Some time ago I was at the emergency room at one of the local hospitals.

While waiting there I saw a woman in a wheelchair crying softly. Not knowing what to expect, I went over and asked her if she was okay.

She said she wasn't and started crying a bit louder. I asked her if there was someone with her and she said no.

She began to tell me about how her family had let her down. She also told me that she felt she was having some kind of breakdown and that she needed help.

I stayed there with her for about 45 minutes and listened while she talked about her crumbling life. Eventually, she asked why I would take time to stop and help someone I didn't even know. I told her that she was one of God's little blessings and that I acted the same way I would want someone to act if I needed help or someone to talk to.

I was able to get her calmed down and feeling a little better about herself before she was admitted to the psychiatric ward for observation. She thanked me for my kindness and was whisked away.

The next day I was at the hospital again. I went to the psychiatric ward and asked them about the patient I met the day before. They couldn't find someone listed by that name. They said that she might have given me a nickname or something and as I wasn't family they could not divulge any information.

The nurse asked me if I was a nurse or some kind of medical provider. I said that I wasn't. She told me that not many people would stop and help someone like the patient and what I did was so commendable. She also said that if I ever went back to school to become a nurse that I should work on a degree to help "depressed" people and to come back and work for them!

You never know what kind of an impact you might have on someone if you smile, make eye contact, nod your head or stop and ask if they need some assistance. You just might help them make a life changing decision.
