Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Family is the Best Medicine

--by reikigardens, posted Jul 3, 2013
I was excited by the possibilities of sharing a meal with my mum, aunt and cousins.  I wanted to make it a monthly meal of togetherness.  I drove more than 250 miles to make this meeting and thought of ways that we could extend this more often.

My mum has been unwell and when I arrived at her home she was irritable and refused to meet family for a meal.  I texted my cousin and said my mum was unable to meet.  My cousin texted me back and said they would bring the family to my mum's home.  I had to go to the bank and when I returned, my mum was sitting up and just reveling in the attention of having her family around. But to add more joy to the event, more great nieces came and shared the day by bringing Girl Scout cookies and their joy of looking at my mum"s collections of figurines.

My cousins spoke to my mum about speaking positive words and replacing her negative thoughts with "I will be thankful for this day and all that come to share their light with me". All during this family gathering, my mum did not complain of her pain and her misery.  She seemed to find a way to smile.

The joy of the children and my cousins and aunt surrounding her with uplifting thoughts was how a difficult day was transformed into a magical healing event.

Before leaving, we planned another family togetherness to uplift and share stories and times of old.  This will become the way that we bridge the generations and keep the legacy of hope  and understanding.
