Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Feeding Stomach and Soul

--by emackaroni83, posted Jul 18, 2013
Over this past weekend, I walked to the local gas station to pick up a couple of things. On my walk home, an older gentleman came up to me and asked if I had any money for him to get something to eat. I told him that I don't carry cash, but if he wanted to follow me, I can get him some food.

We walked to my apartment and talked the whole way. He was a veteran from the Vietnam War and recently lost his banking job that he held for over 20 years in banking. He had recently become homeless, and he shared that he has no living relatives left in the area. He felt all alone, with no idea where he was going to sleep tonight.

Struck by our conversation, I took a chance and invited him to my apartment.  I introduced him to my roommate and set about making him something to eat. I didn't have anything exciting, but heated up some leftover spaghetti from the night before with salad and garlic bread. He ate and ate and talked. It was like listening to a time capsule as he shared about his time in Vietnam, living out in San Francisco, and loving the world of banking.

When he was done, I asked him about where he thought he might sleep that evening. He said he didn't know. I called a friend of mine who works at a local homeless shelter to inquire about getting this man a place to sleep tonight. My friend arranged for transportation to come get this man and take him to the shelter.

My roommate and I gave him a couple of bags of groceries and toiletries to help him settle in at the shelter. He thanked us and cried so much, thanking us for our kindness. We asked him to just pass it on. :)
