Sandwich Therapy

--by Ammi, posted Jan 20, 2014
Last night, I was waiting in line to place my order at a fast food place. The lady just ahead of me was taking a long time to order and asking the cashier many questions about the options. That slowed us all down, just enough for me, who seldom notices what people wear, to notice that she was dressed like a person who has been living on the street.

Maybe she was homeless and was having a hard time placing her order in a place with limited choices on the menu because this was already more choice than she had ever had in her life.

I saw this as an opportunity and walked up to stand near her by the cashier. When she had finished ordering, I asked her if she would mind if I just paid for her sandwich.

She looked at me and asked, "you want to pay for my sandwich? That has never happened to me before. Thank you, yes, I did. She smiled and my heart smiled. I had a rough day and had been feeling drained.

Our little exchange drained out the negativity of the day from me. Her smile immediately put me in the place of feeling the abundance of life again.

It was the fastest way for me to feel good myself. I am so grateful for her acceptance because she could just as easily have have said -- no thank you to my offer. She gave me something much more valuable than a sandwich, and didn't even know that. How is that for fair trade.
