Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Dancing in the Rain!

--by philster, posted Jul 31, 2007

I recently moved back to my home State of Florida after being gone for 28 years.  I am 29 with an additional 18 years experience.

In Florida, this time of the year, one thing is certain -- rain.  As I got older, I started to think of it as a bother if I had to go somewhere but otherwise, it was a joyful event in my mind.  Two and a half years ago, I had cervical spine surgery that was damaged and cannot be fixed.  I suffer from daily neck aches, headaches and sometimes migraines.

Last week, I awoke and it was raining -- no thunder and lightening, just rain.  I love to go to sleep when it is raining and as a kid, I would beg and plead to just go play in the rain.  I was usually allowed as long as it was just raining.  I would spend hours on my back in the grass feeling the rain on my face, jumping into puddles, building stick boats and following them to the gutter.

As I was thinking of this time in my life, it brought a smile to my face.  I waited in bed for the thunder and lightening, but none.  So, I put on a pair of cut off sweats and a shirt, took a beach chair and sat in the rain.

It was WONDERFUL, letting it fall on my face again, feeling it hit my body.  I then walked for half an hour in the rain, stopping under streams coming off the roof leting it hit the top of my head, water streaming down my face.  Just getting soaked to the bone.  I then went for a walk around my complex in the parking area.  Long wide streams of water, me stomping in them, kicking the puddles, stomping the puddles and just mentally letting go.

For about an hour, I forgot about my pains, problems, life issues at 29 with 18 years more of experience.  I was kind to me.  I am not often that with self criticism but that morning, my life was good ... just letting the rain wash away all the things that generally load me down.

Thanks for letting me share and reading my story.

Tigerlily wrote: I remember those daily rains in Florida. When I was a child we went back and forth between Florida and ... another state. I 'm sending out my compassion for your times of pain, I guess and can't let it pass without saying how remarkable it is that you care to rise above that with kindness and sharing. We all need to let the rains take us away from time to time though, don't we? Godspeed.

I really loved the rain when I was young too. Now when I hear it rain I fell comforted and for some reason it reminds me that God loves me.

I too am "29 with an additional 18 years experience" ;o)
It rained on a Monday a couple of weeks ago...and I had co-miserated with a friend about the whole "rainy days & Mondays" thing...but then I received an email of a beautiful Thomas Kinkade painting with rain actually falling across the painting...it made me feel a similar way as you & suddenly, rainy days got a whole lot better! :o)
