Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Only The Clothes On Her Back

--by mree48, posted Mar 14, 2015
We were one of the last couples among our friends and family to begin having children and were inundated with free baby gear and hand me downs. We are truly fortunate. We were blessed with 2 beautiful babes and for a time, I thought that we might have a third but time and life have moved forward and it became clear that it was not going to be.

It took me awhile to be able to pass along our good fortune, partly because I was not ready to part with baby items and partly because we kept looking for someone who had a need.

Finally, in the last week or so, I've managed to go through all of the kid's clothes and today, sent my husband to our local Crisis Nursery with SIX black garbage bags full of kid's clothes. When he arrived home, he told me that they were very happy for the donation and immediately asked if there was anything in all those bags that might fit a six year old girl.

The staff at the nursery told him that a neighboring shelter for abused women and their children had called because someone had sought help and the shelter (and the nursery) had nothing for the woman's daughter. She had only the clothes she was wearing.

Last week I had purchased a new coat for my daughter but then found another that we liked better, so we decided to return the first. I am thankful that I had not yet done so. When my husband told me what the staff said, I immediately went to the storage tote containing clothes that were still too large for my daughter. I packed up all the clothes that were in the tote, along with the new coat and sent my husband to the women's shelter. He said they were very grateful.

And though, I am still worried for the little girl whom I've never seen, I feel the slightest bit better knowing that she at least has a few changes of clothes and maybe she (and her mom) will know that someone out there is thinking of them.

Im sure that little girl was happy getting a coat, a new coat, and all the other items as well. But you were truly a great blessing. To a mother whom no doubtedly felt very blessed and very grateful that someone, another mom, thought and cared enough to help her when she was at her lowest and focusing on just her and her little girl's survival!

God bless you and your family, the staff at both shelters, and that mother and daughter!

I am an avid reader and donate all my books to the local prison for their library. I know the men are happy to have a wide variety of books to read. I get them at thrift stores or flea markets so they are cheap for me.
