Dinosaur Diner -- Just Because

--by omtaratutare, posted Aug 23, 2007
I promised my children we would stop at the Big Dinosaurs off of  InterState-10 on our way home from a trip to Arizona.  On this trip, we had my children's charity money and a few smile cards.

We were sitting at a table in the old run down diner. I admired all the old relics and someone's art on the wall. My son said, "They should not sell that.  It looks good right there."  "Someone might want it in their home," I tell him.  And so our conversations went.

Then, I ask my kids if we could leave their charity money as an extra tip for the waitress with a smile card.   My son protested, "NO! They all have homes here ... we need to give some to the homeless or a charity."

I sat there and smiled and respected his wishes.  I put their pouch back in my purse.

Then, in a spurt of inspiration, I said, "Today, I am going to pay for that guys check."  My son, wanted to know why and I told him, "Just to make his night.  Maybe he will do something nice with the money he saved."

Then, I called over the waitress and I told her what I wanted to do. Confused, she asked in one quick breath, “Do you know him? Is he homeless? Why?"

I quickly responded, "No, No.  Just to be nice. Please give him this card instead of his bill."

She could not understand and thought I was nuts!  She then walked right over to him, told him and pointed to me. As if that weren't enough, in a loud voice she said, "She is the one."  The waitress simply didn't get the concept.  Nonetheless, my kids and I rushed out the restaurant, in a fun, mischevious way, never turning around once.

I don't know the final outcome of that money, but I am certain they all stopped to think for a brief moment -- why is she buying him/me dinner?

As any good mother always says, "Just because."

Theres a saying that goes something like"We do not know the effects of kind acts, but without kind acts there would be no effects"

Lots of love and smiles:)
