Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Smile Card For a Soldier's Wife

--by hobo, posted Sep 9, 2007

While we were out eating last night I observed a service man in his fatigues sitting with his wife and young child.  It was obvious that he was just back from overseas and was enjoying the time with his family.

Whether we support the military action or not, I always feel thankful that there are those who are willing to risk their lives for others and who make so many personal  sacrifices like being away from their loved ones.  I looked around the restaurant and saw few other people observing them also.

As we finished our dinner, we paid the check and then I walked by their table.  I laid down one of the Smile Cards with a $50.  I looked right at the soldiers wife and said, "Thank you."  Without waiting for a response, I turned and walked away.

This morning, I received a call from my friend who owns the restaurant.  He reported that after I left, other patrons also went by the table and thanked the soldier and his wife.  One older gentleman stood and saluted.  As they walked out, people started leaving money at the cashier.  The family has been adopted and will not pay for any meals as long as he is home on leave.

When we perform an act of kindness, it affects others.  It spreads like wild fire.  All it takes is ONE person to start it!

When he is home and not on assignment, he will tell me stories about people thanking him for his service if they see him pumping gas in his uniform or if he has to run into a store real quick for an errand...and policemen are even forgiving if they pull him over for going a little too fast in his car, but they see his uniform. I am so proud of my husband and the job that he does and I make a point of telling him so, but thanks to you and all the others that also go out of their way to let him and other military members how much we appreciate their service! God Bless.
