Stories of Kindness from Around the World

To My Dad

--by carolynmcdonough, posted Jan 16, 2015
I can never repay my father for all of the lessons he taught me that made me the person I am today.

From my father, I learned that giving is only that when you expect nothing in return. You give from your heart.

I learned that a day without laughter is a wasted day. I never let a day go by without finding humor in something, but never at the expense of another. That was one of his other lessons - if it is hurtful to someone else, it is never funny.

My Dad supported me in so many ways, encouraging me to go back to school and finish my college degree. While he wasn't sitting in the stands watching me walk that stage, I know he was smiling down with pride in his eyes.

And although I will never be able to repay him, I can honor him by passing these lessons on to others. Thank you, Dad.

I loved getting out for hikes with him, snow-shoeing, etc. He taught me great respect for nature, he had a real sympathy for the american indian as well, and i still carry that with me in my appreciation of nature and using it in my art. My dad had a strong faith in god, he was a great husband and father, friend to so many. And a good listener. I had such good times confiding in him, especially when i was troubled and hurting. His soothing voice was so special, and i can still hear it sometimes. He has been gone for 25 yrs. Now, but still with me in so many ways. Even when i am somewhere new, i sometimes think to myself, "dad would have loved to have seen this and spent time here. " i think our parents affect us in tremendous ways, and hopefully for the good. And it is wonderful to have them with us in those many ways even after they are "gone". I hope i can leave as good a legacy for my children. I think i will, i am very close to them, and we have had some wonderful opportunities through homeschooling and travel. I know my dad would be proud.

Do for your children what they did for you, and then some, if you want to repay them. I am sure you will pass on the gifts that your dad gave you to others. Thanks for sharing this story.
