Stories of Kindness from Around the World

My Kindness Mentor

--by brighteyes, posted Sep 23, 2007

We are invited to a family gathering during our visit in CA  (including my Mom) at my My Sister-in-law, D's home. She had decided to host a BBQ in honor of our visit.

She instructed us not to bring anything except ourselves. We, of course, brought a big box of speciality chocolates to share with the group. (Mom taught me never to visit anyone empty handed).

There were huge steaks, pork loins, homemade potato salad, fresh berries, apple pie a la mode and more! Quite a spread.

I tried to assist her in the kitchen but she wanted me to go back to join the group and catch up. I noticed how hard she and her hubby were working to feed the group. They could not spend as much time as her siblings and parents chatting with us. They were too busy cooking, serving and cleaning up.

Early the next day, my Mom grabbed her car keys stating, "Come on!". We were off to the florist. She had decided we would send flowers to thank D and her family in a special way for going out of her way for us all.

I picked out a bright arrangement in a blue glass vase (her favorite color) . We also purchased separate thank you cards  to jot our thanks and let her know how much we appreciated her coordinating and hosting the BBQ.

There was a message blinking on Mom's phone later that day from D saying what a surprise the wonderful flowers were, thanking us and saying they were not necessary but she was so touched and they made her day! We could hear the joy in her voice. We played the message again, both smiled and hugged.

The BBQ Bouquet touched many hearts that day: D's, her family and ours too. My Mom is my Kindness Mentor and we had fun during my visit practicing RAOK together and swamping ideas.

It was a pattern I found on line and came with a poem which is quite catchy. I got requests from others to make them one. I have to admit I haven't done that yet, but , hey, Christmas will be here before we know it....
