Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Making Room for One More

--by kjreed, posted Sep 29, 2007

My daughter has a former classmate that is a special needs child. He has lots of issues and is being raised w/ his grandma along w/ several other siblings.

The grandma doesn't drive and rarely gets out. I have kinda adopted this little boy as one of my own. Whenever we take our kids out for fun activities I always call and invite him. The grandma is on a fixed income and she states because these are considered "kinship placements" with the grandkids she is not eligible to receive any state assistance. Therefore leaving her w/ money for the necessities only each month.

Now, I, myself do good to get by w/ little fun stuff each month and I always utilize free first! But, no matter what I give them a call and include him along with us. One time I even invited all of the kids there at her house to a hayride & picnic! He enjoys getting out as he doesn't have any friends and I enjoy being able to put that smile on his face and seeing the happiness in his eyes.

When he knows we are coming he's always standing in the doorway w/ a big smile eagerly awaiting my arrival. That so tickles my heart to be able to do the little bit that I am able to do.
