Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Ti Kanis?

--by jennieG, posted Dec 13, 2007

As I was walking down the frozen aisle section of our grocery store, a little old lady comes up to me.  There was  no one around so she asks me softly, "Do you shop here often? Do you mind if I ask you something?"  I said, "Sure."  "Well, I am looking for the frozen pastry sheets and I cannot seem to find them".  Aha, I told her to follow me as I took her down to the frozen desserts aisle.  On the way, she told me that she did not want to impose but there is no way that  I was going to leave little old lady wandering on her own -- supermarkets can often feel overwhelming!

As we walked, to make small talk, I asked her what she was going to do with it and she replied that she was Greek and that her grandson is on leave from the military and that she was making one of his favourite dishes.

To her surprise, I asked, "Oh ti kanis!  So will it be baklava (sweet dessert with honey and nuts) or spanakopita (spinach pie) ? They are my favourites!!"  Suspiciously, she looked at me and said, "You are not Greek right?"   BTW, I am Asian and look very asian so ehm, no.  ;-)  I then proceeded to tell her that one of my very best friends is Greek and I know my Greek food.

Once we got to the section, I showed her the filo pastry that she was looking for (she was so glad that I knew exactly what she needed).  Then she asked me if there were any ready made food available since they were going to a baseball game right away.  I brought her to the delicatessen section to get sandwiches made and also reminded her that maybe she also should get drinks.

As she waved goodbye, she said  "You are such a doll, Thank-you" ... and it made my evening!

By the way, "Ti kanis" is "How are you?" in Greek. :)
