Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Sharing My Photography Skills

I was asked several years ago if I would be willing to volunteer my services as a photographer to a charity golf tournament that a co-worker had helped to organize just outside of Houston, Texas. I had been an amateur photographer since high school and the event sounded like fun so I accepted his offer. It was Johnny Lee’s Second Annual Country Swinging Golf Classic for Project Joy and Hope. I photographed the celebrity players, the sponsors and volunteers and had a ball doing it and continued to volunteer annually at this event for several more years. The experience helped opened a door for me into the world of community service, volunteerism and those that give of themselves to their community

I have since relocated thee times, and have been forced to be away from those I love for long periods. But I have never forgotten that first time I got involved in my community or the people I met. This knowledge has provided me with both strength and a refuge on the road. When I get to feeling a little blue all I have to do is open up the local paper where ever I find my self and look for a community event to offer my services to - and off me and my camera go!

Today’s technology has allowed me to record hundreds of images at any given event and place them on to a compact disk for almost nothing. As event organizers can seldom afford to hire a photographer my services are always well received. They use the images I capture to do everything from promote their next year's event to providing their sponsors with a lasting memento of thanks for their generosity. And as for me, I get to immerse myself into a group of old friends I’ve never met.

We were just looking at photos at work and everyone was gathered around the screen laughing. I just loved that little bit of togetherness before we all skittered off to do our own thing again.

I am impressed. A literal example of how "doing good" does the "do-er" good! ;) Smiles all the way around.
