Stories of Kindness from Around the World

A Cookie Gram On Mother's Day

--by mistystallard, posted Jan 25, 2008

My son is my world and I love everything about him.

When he was 3, he was diagnosed with a terminal brain-stem tumor.  Doctors gave him a 50% chance of surviving the first year and 10% in the second year.   I am proud to say that it has been a little over two years now since then.

About a month ago, though, we were told that his tumor was active again and that we really dont know what going to happen from day to day.  It's tough on us.  But the saving grace has been the unexpected kindness of so many wonderful strangers who comfort and give words of advice.  No one claims to have a cure for the pain and sorrow you feel when dealing with the loss of a child, but many people offer their warmth that helps us heal.

In particular, there is this one nurse who has been there with us through all of this.  Without her, I dont know if I would be as strong as I am now.  She goes way out of her way to see how my son is and just to say hi.

On Mothers Day last year, I received an unexpected package.  It was a cookie gram from that nurse.  It made me so happy.   I cried because you realize that people do care and there are a few really special people out there.

Thank you for listening to my ramble of a story ... it feels good to let others know.

Thank you for sharing such a wonderful but "bitter sweet" story.

Everything life situation and challenge can be perceived 2 ways: cup helf empty or full, etc

How blessed you are to have a son, a wonderful son at that...some like me are not so fortunate...but I am so sadden to hear of his illness. Enjoy your time together making special moments and memories to sustain you and also make his life the best ever.

It's a no-brainer that you love him and visa versa and that love surrounds you all.

Blessings to that earth nurse angel for her loving ways, compassion and tenderhearted care for your son and you.

Thanks for sharing your heart. You have been through a lot! I just lost my Mom to cancer in April and that was very painful. However, having a child suffering with cancer must be unbearable! I will say that what has helped me through the grief like nothing else, is knowing that Jesus Christ is with me. I pray that you have the comfort and strength in this difficult time.

He has allowed to experience His presence in those around you, I am not sure I would feel this if I was standing were you are. I believe in miracles and will be praying for all of you.

I can imagine that it is a difficult time. You are in my prayers. And thank you for sharing this story with us. --Kathryn
