Putting Scraps of Wool to Good Use

--by churchlady, posted Mar 1, 2008

I stopped smoking a few years ago and as a result, I found myself unable to sit still for any amount of time. I took up needlework as a hobby to work on as I watched a movie or TV show with my other half.

Recently, my pastor's wife told me of a missionary friend of hers who happens to be home on furlow. This woman spoke of how in the country she was posted, there was a real shortage of blankets. She asked some of the ladies from her church to knit or crochet blankets out of scraps of wool that she could take back with her. It seems that although she is posted in a warm country, the sea brings in quite a breeze at night and the weather becomes quite chilly.

My pastor's wife mentioned that she had been given a large box of wool and was working on knitting strips to make a blanket. She asked what I thought of her work as she wasn't much of a knitter. Well, after letting her know that her plan looked good, I asked if I could help. She immediately jumped up, and with great glee she pulled out the box, telling me to take whatever I needed to work on a blanket. She told me that it would be wonderful to have another knitter on board. I immediately went to work with my crochet hook and made a blanket. It didn't take long, as I worked on it every evening.

After delivering the finished blanket, it occurred to me that I might look in my own cupboard. When I did, I found several good sized balls of primary coloured wool which got me to thinking -- 'they must have little ones down there too!' So, I'm now working on a blanket of primary coloured stripes for a child. It should be ready to go within a few weeks and make a nice gift for someone with a toddler or a baby.  What a great way to clean up leftover balls of wool!
