Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Reaching Out in a Waiting Room

--by miamaia, posted Apr 22, 2008

While I was waiting at the neurooncologist's office for my 3-month check-up on my brain cancer (it is inoperable, so they just monitor it), I noticed a nice older lady sitting in the waiting room, who seemed a little upset.  I smiled at her and asked how her day was going.  She came to sit next to me and tears started falling.  She was just informed that her daughter had a new tumour growing in her brain.  Although it may not seem like much to some people, I decided to share my story with her, hoping it would help her to realize that she is not alone.

I am a 40 year-old mother of 3 teenagers and I was diagnosed with two inoperable brain tumours last year.  The doctors say my life expectancy is 5-7 years, but God says something different.  I have learned that everyday is a blessing.

I talked with the lady for some time, listened, hugged her and gave her a book I received from Dave Drevecky's cancer site.  I also told her about a wonderful site that sends cards to people with brain cancer, so that she could send her love today.  In the end, this lady left with a little more hope, knowing she is not alone in what her family is going through.

If anyone makes cards, just remember that you can use them to touch people' s lives.  My cards always seem to come on a day when I'm feeling down, and they always seem to turn my day around.

It talked about how medical science cannot explain why some people live against all odds. It talked about the mystery that isn't able to be explained. A person receives a diagnosis and lives another 20 years.
I remember a young woman, with leukemia, engaged to be married. Her last visit to us made me wonder how long it would be. A few years later, this same beautiful woman walked in to our office, married, in remission and living a wonderful life.
The doctor said he knew he worked for something much bigger than him.
Much love to you.
