Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Coffee Karma

Today something happened that made me open my eyes wide.  It was at a Coffee Shop drive-thru.

My morning was pretty much a disaster.  I was late dropping my daughter off at daycare, only to realize I had forgotten most of the things she needed for the day.  My journey home to grab those items cost me another 10 minutes of my morning.  The gas tank was running low.  Somehow I managed to make it all work, barely.

Since I already knew I was going to be late, I decided to make my way to the Coffee Shop drive-thru to brighten my morning a bit.  After waiting in line for 5 or 6 minutes, I was finally near the order box when I noticed a lady struggling to enter the line from the other entrance to the parking lot.  She'd waited there for a while, I figured.  As I was already gonna be late, I let her go ahead in front of me ... much to the dismay of the folks behind me.  I got a couple jeers and remarks and scoffs.

As I fumbled for change to pay for my coffee, I realized that I hadn't brought it with me. It wasn't where it was supposed to be, in the pocket I always keep it in.  I must have forgotten it at home with all of the other stuff I forgot!

I took a deep breath.  And I made my way out of the line and got back on my way to work without my morning coffee.  "Oh well, its just a cup of coffee.  I will survive," I tried telling myself.  At the least, I'm glad I traded spots with the lady in the van and had a chance to help her out.

When I arrived at work, I sat down and took a deep breath.

From out of nowhere, a co-worker of mine appeared at the office door with a cup of coffee in his hand ... for me!  He and his fiancee had recognized my car in the drive-thru at the Coffee Shop.  They were just two cars behind me and had witnessed me letting the van-lady into the line ... and then suddenly pulling away myself.  "We could just feel you were having a bad morning," he said to me as he handed me the coffee cup.

With that, I smiled very large.  In fact, I acutally laughed out loud.  What a perfect morning!
