Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Summer Camp Superheroes

Volunteering at a summer camp is not an easy task, especially when you're not being paid to do it. However, I find myself going year after year to be a counselor because it's just so much fun.
However, this story is not about what I have done but what others have done for me. During summer camp there are a number of parents who attend because their children are too young to be dorm students or simply because they want to spend time with their kids in the Buddhist monastic environment of the camp, hoping to maybe take a breather from the toils of everyday life.
From the moment they arrive these parents seem to be everywhere, working so hard to help in the community by washing dishes, taking nuns to see the doctor, buying groceries, helping get other supplies, sweeping around the monastery and finding time to go to the Buddha Hall and attend all the ceremonies. I don't know where they find the energy to be able to do so much and their dedication is just so overwhelming at times. At the end of camp I find it oh so hard to say goodbye because these are people I admire so much, who ask for so little, who are always giving and never complaining or seeking anything in return. Thank you, summer camp parents.

Just always remember that your friendship will be ingrained in the memories of kids who will, years later, look back fondly on their days at summer camp. That was the case for me, as for many of my friends. Thank you for sharing your experience with us -- this is just the sweetest thing!
