Stories of Kindness from Around the World

"My main focus was helping ..."

My husband and I were on our way home from Christmas with my family when I noticed a lady, probably in her early 40's, standing in a church lawn near the highway holding a sign that read, "will work for food." When I see these type of things, my heart breaks. Living in a small town, seeing these types of things is rare, despite the terrible economy and unemployment rate. It was Christmas and all I could think about was how this lady should be at home with her family, enjoying the season, but instead, she was begging for work, just to be fed.
I know there are people out there who do those type of things for free money or free food, but I didn't care. My main focus was helping this lady however I could. My husband drove us to the nearest gas station, considering it was Christmas and all the grocery stores were closed. I was clueless what to get this lady, so I grabbed the largest bottle of cold water I could find, a pack of crackers and a big bag of potato chips. I still felt like I wasn't doing enough, but I also wanted to buy things that would travel well in case she was homeless and that wouldn't need refrigeration. After leaving the store, we went back to where the lady was standing and gave her the bag of food and told her Merry Christmas. She just smiled and took the bag of food and walked away, her sign at her side as if that little bit of food and water we took her was enough to satisfy her hunger.
For me this was the greatest blessing, the feeling of helping someone in need rather than just any material gift.

He asked me to give it to her but I was afraid she would attack me or something. My son got out of the car and placed the items next to her grocery cart and she paid no mind. I was so proud that he was sensitive enough to do that act. God bless people like you, your husband, and my son...

Christmas spirit should remain with us all year round ...it must be the energy of love and light from Christ....let's try to keep in glowing and growing inside so it bubbles out for all we encounter.

We do not exchange gifts in my household except for the kids and they are getting bigger and just want money or gift cards.

The gifts that brought me pleasure as always were the ones to people or children or charities....also I baked and cooked for my friends and family making sure to add lots of love...I was tired but truly happy as I was giving of myself.

You truly have the Christmas spirit and enriched my day when reading your generosity.
