Less Is More When It Comes to Spring Cleaning!

--by brighteyes, posted Jun 1, 2008

It was a very cold, windy and snowy day so hubby and I decided to clean and re-organize the basement, closets, etc.  We had moved from CA to CO 5 years ago and I cannot believe how much we accumulated in that time as we gave away, donated, recycled and threw away as much as possible before our move.

Recently, my hubby found a box filled with toys, clothes and other goodies with the price tags on.  I used to buy things on sale for my nieces and nephews that I knew they would enjoy, sometimes a size larger, and then gift them on their birthday, Christmas, etc.  I had forgotten about this stash when we moved and now our nieces & nephews are in their teens.  So we decided to gift the items to others!

I immediately  called my friends and a few co-workers and I have given away many of the items.   What is not given away to them will be given to local charities.  We bagged clothes and coats we have not worn, shoes and purses as well, pots & pans slotted for Good Will.  We bagged books and magazines and gave them to the library, our work book exchange and a local secondhand bookstore for others to enjoy.

One of our resolutions this year is not to acquire so much stuff. When in doubt give it away!  My hubby says, and rightly so, "Others are in need and if we do not use things within a year, we need to share them and give them away."   My Mom always said and makes it a practice to clean at the end of every year and give away. She said, "You are cleansed on ALL levels -- physcially, mentally, emotionally and spiritually," and I have to agree with her, it's liberating!!

The more we give,  the less we have, the BETTER we feel!
