Tuesday's Kindness Report
It's amazing what can happen with you venture out with the mission of kindness! Yesterday, I had a most successful trip out. :) First, I started off by recycling and picking up trash around the dumpsters. Then, I put a muffler, hat, and gloves in a bag to give to the woman who lives under a bridge near her home. I didn't see the lady who would give it to her, but I have the bag ready-to-go in car for when I do meet up with her. Then, while running some errands, I chatted up with the clerks at Trader Joe's. It was nice to have some laughter and good conversation. After that, I swung by the bank. I had been to the bank about six weeks ago, on my birthday, and the new teller remembered and asked how my day had been. We ended up chatting about kindness, and I shared ... Read Full Story >>

First Two Days On KindSpring
Can I start with yesterday? I was out and about yesterday. I did my usual picking up of trash and I complimented the shift-manager at Wal-Mart on the positive changes I saw around the store after a talk we had about trash inside and outside the store. I listened to a clerk at Dollar Tree as she told me about some family problems. Then I gave her a hug! I gave my contact info to a clerk at Trader Joe's. I told him I knit and crochet. So, he's going to keep an eye out at his daughter's school for kids who need gloves, hats, or mufflers. He promised to let me know which items are needed. I will make them and he will deliver them! Then, I let two folks with fewer groceries than me cut ahead of me at check-out. I bought some greeting cards for vets at the VA Hospital hospice unit ... Read Full Story >>

Sister Judith Answers the Door
My friend, Sister Judith, taught English at the local Catholic High School. Her room was "the" gathering spot for many students. Because she spent so much time with them, she fell behind in grading papers.
One morning, she was at school early, determined to grade that whole stack of papers before school began. She locked her door. No interruptions! Then came the knock on the door. One of her favorite students, who wouldn't go away and insistent on coming in.
She marched over to the door, opened it abruptly and said, "I'm very busy, this better be good." His face fell, his eyes filled with tears and he said, "Oh, Sister Judith I just wanted you to know my father died last night."
When she told me this, her eyes filled with tears, and she said, "And I'm a nun!"
Need I add that those papers were NOT graded that morning?

Kindspring Grant : cards for veterans
At the Albuquerque, NM Veteran's Administration Hospital ("VA"), there are two units focused on long-term care: The Spinal Cord Injury Unit with 26 beds, and Unit 4D with 23 beds. Unit 4D houses long-term rehabilitation, palliative care and hospice patients. On any given day, there is an average of 22-24 patients in each unit. Many of these veterans, who range in service from World War II, through Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq and other areas of conflict, have no outside support. For various reasons, they receive no mail, and no visits from family or friends. Over time, by volunteering at the hospital, I’ve learned some of the reasons why these veterans are all alone. One is time and the expense of getting to the hospital. I walked in with a visitor who had driven 5 hours one way. He was lucky because he had a car and could drive. Some people are just ...
