"Scentsational" Kindness From A Thoughtful Friend

A few days ago I was the blessed recipient of a poignant act of kindness. A friend texted me to ask if she could do a flower drop off.

She had earlier brought me fresh cut white lilacs, knowing what a hard spring this is for me - the first season without my beloved perennial garden. This time she gifted me a small bouquet of lilies of the valley, one of the scents I miss the most (the others being my plum blossoms, and my peonies).

She found them in her own back yard (she also had moved). That familiar potent scent brought tears of joy and longing to my eyes. For a dozen years at least, I made sure to share my peonies with her - it was our tradition; I was so touched by her thoughtfulness.

I quickly sniffed all the sniff out of those lilies, which was yet another lesson in the ephemeral nature of joy, but the little blossom bells are still so cheery!

8 Year Old Kindness Ninja

I went out to dinner with friends this evening, and as we got up to leave I saw my friend’s 8 year old son hand a small piece of paper to our waitress. His mom explained that he had told her the gal was the best waitress ever. Too shy to tell her, he took his mom’s suggestion to write his compliment down and give it to her.

What a delight to see an expression of kindness in action!

Following Through On Gratitude

Today I took the time to write a comment card to my neighborhood natural foods co-op. Recently returned from a three month stay out of the country, I have been thrilled to re-encounter not only some of my favorite foods, but also the familiar smiling and welcoming faces of the staff there, some of whom seem to remember me even though they don't know my name. I wanted them to know how grateful I am.

So many times I have wanted to express appreciation to a store clerk or service person who goes out his/her way, or whose small gesture made my day, but somehow then I don't follow through. Today I wanted to make sure I did. Who made YOUR day, and did you tell them that? 😊
