Just A Little Smile

 

I was sitting in a fast food restaurant when I noticed an older gentleman walking in. As he passed by I smiled at him, politely acknowledging his presence. That was all.
 
A few minutes later he stopped in front of my table. A little awkwardly he explained he was a married man and didn't want to put me in an uncomfortable position, but he really wanted to tell me how much he had appreciated my smile. 
 
"Not many people give a friendly smile to a stranger these days," he said, "and I just wanted to thank you for your kind gesture."
 
His response surprised me but my reaction to his words was even more surprising. I was just filled with warmth!
 
It is true that smiles are few and far between from strangers these days and I was just happy to have done a little bit to redress that imbalance.
 
Even a small gesture like a smile can bring out the best in others and, as an added bonus, it will usually bring out something good in you as well!
