Stories of Kindness from Around the World

A Thank You To The People That Help

--by trueblue, posted Jan 1, 2011

My son was competing in a school competition for bowling, and after watching him play a few rounds, I let him know I was going to walk around the shops for a while.

Afterward, I was on my way back to watch my son bowl some more when I noticed a man sitting on a seat holding onto the side of a trolley.  As I got closer, I began wondering if he had a disability but realized he was in distress when I noticed his knuckles had turned white.  I approached him asking if he was ok.  He looked at me and mumbled some words, so I asked if he was diabetic, but he just stared at me.  I tried to get him to sit upright to relieve his fingers, but he was a large man, and I had to call for help.  Two ladies came to his aid from the center's management, which seemed to take forever.  The shops were busy with people, and I wondered why no one before me had noticed or offered to help.

After the ladies arrived, the three of us helped him up off the trolley and managed to get him onto the floor, while someone called for an ambulance.  When the ambulance finally arrived, the man's blood sugar level was so low that it did not register a reading.  After about an hour of trying to keep him awake, the paramedics managed to give him a needle and get him stable before they took him to hospital.

I looked at the time and made my way back to my son's competition, while hoping I wasn't going to be late.  On the way, I saw the paramedic that attended to the man with diabetes.  I quickly grabbed a Smile Card from my bag and handed it to him, saying that this is for you because you are such a nice person.  He took the card from me, read it, and gave me the biggest smile, which gave me that warm fuzzy feeling.  I was worried about the diabetic man at the time, but he was going to be okay.  So I felt happy...but I felt even happier when I was able to thank the paramedic for the outstanding kindness he showed while helping others.
