Simply the Nudge

--by Dobby, posted May 1, 2013

Two weeks ago, my daughter came to me a bit frantic.

One of her school friends, nine months pregnant and about to give birth any day, was kicked out of her house because her mother wouldn't leave her husband (the girl's stepdad) who was hitting the girl.

She fled to the home of her boyfriend's parents. They, however, were packing up to move to a larger house. Being in transition themselves, her boyfriend's family couldn't host her at that time, and she was at a loss for where to go.

So, two weeks ago, my daughter came to me asking if her friend can come live with us until the boyfriend's family finished moving.

Well, here's a girl in trouble. I talked it over with my husband, who gave his ok. So we got things ready for her.

She must have told her mom what was going on, though, because before she had a chance to move in, her mother agreed to make her husband leave, at least until she could move into the boyfriend's parent's house.

Soon after, she had her baby. A healthy boy. My daughter has been in contact with her regularly, making sure everything's okay between her and her mother. So far, so good. I don't know if her mom was shamed by how she treated her daughter, or if she was afraid child protection services would be called in now that strangers knew about the situation. Whatever changed her mind and attitude, I'm grateful for it. And I hope that seeing her beautiful grandson continues to change her heart.

This just goes to show, that, sometimes, maybe we are simply meant be the nudge for another person to do the right thing.

BELLO wrote: I am impressed by your daughter's level of care AND by the fact that she could feel that it was okay to even THINK that she could bring something positive to the friend's situation via YOU, her parents. It speaks a lot about the kind of relation you have with your daughter and it suggests that should your daughter be caught in a similar situation YOU would be there for her. Where LOVE is present, SECURITY and TRUST abounds. Thank you for sharing this story.
