Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Helping Our Abandoned Animal Friends

--by Loretta Blondeau, posted Aug 24, 2006
My nieghbour abandoned his home over one month ago and left 3 beautiful cats locked in his hame to starve. I knew he had left for good, and had left his animals behind as I saw the cats in the window.

I called every agency but in this small town there are very few, the only thing we have is a dog catcher, and he wouldn't come as it was a private home, he said he could do nothing about it. I could not accept that, so I went and opened the window wide enough for the cats to get out. My daughter and I fed them everyday, we posted posters all over town in the hope of finding them a home. I also bought ad time on a local radio station and sent out ads looking for people to adopt them. Because they were older, no one wanted them, I had 2 cats and 2 dogs of my own and could not have them in the house. I continued spending lots of time with them, and feed them for over a month, when all hope of finding a home was lost I could not bear to send them to an animal shelter that would just put them down, so I looked hard and found a no-kill shelter a few hours away in another town.

I packed up my friends and as my heart broke I took them to a place that could at least offer them shelter and who I knew would feed them. I left instructions that if I bought the home I had hoped that would have a large garage if they had not found a home for any of them at that time, I would come back and get whoever was left over. These beautiful friends of mine never asked to be left to such a horror as to starve to death in a home that used to provide them security. Even though they had to go to a no-kill shelter, they are alive today and may get a home, at the very least, they got another chance. I hope others can open their hearts enough that if they are looking for a new animal member for the family they would think about adopting older animals, and definetly ones from shelters or rescue society's. These are beautiful and loving animals who just needed a chance.

I left a SMILE card on the door, I don't know if anyone will ever see it, but it is there. Maybe if he ever did come back he would see someone did him a favor, and perhaps one day he would change, and do something back for another, or an animal friend.

God bless you for turning a horrible example of neglect and indifference into an example of compassion and hope.
