Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Bubble 911

--by MOSIE, posted Sep 24, 2007
I will try to write a clear story so that others may find it enjoyable to read. My grandaughter Zoey wil be 11 years old on 9/11. Her favorite word is bubble; that's the reason for my title.

Zoey and I live 800 miles apart; Lack of money keeps me from personal visits with her. We talk every week on the phone. Zoey is "personality plus!"  She asks serious, thoughtful questions, such as, "Grandma, what do you think of capital punishment?" At other times and in different moods, she chats about "friend stuff." We share our favorite colors, numbers, names, books, and so on. Zoey and I even give each other spelling and math tests; we have lots of fun!

I feel truly privileged to know this young woman who I call my grandaughter. You see, Zoey was an emergency  caesarean section; she was born with her umbilical  cord wrapped around her neck twice; she may easily have died. I had a traumatic brain injury five months before she was born; I am visually impaired but alive; the doctors told my pregnant daughter the odds were strong that I would die.

I feel blessed to listen to Zoey when she shares herself with me. I often reminisce to the day when the doctor exclaimed, "it's baby time!" (I was permitted into the OR to watch my grandchild's birth.) I could barely see Zoey's newborn form as she  was lifted from my daughter's womb. I feel honored listening to Zoey as she shares herself freely with me, and her enthusiasm for life.
Zoey is a MIRACLE.

This past week I wrote Zoey a letter with a picture of me and my guide dog that she has yet  to meet,  tucked in some stamps, fun bookmarks, two one-dollar bills, and a SMILE card. Finally, I folded a piece of hot pink stationery (Zoey's favorite color!) and a note enclosed  asking her to please write.

I hope that Zoey writes to me. She has aplogized for her lack of correspondence before, asking me if I remember her and if I'm still her friend when she does not write. As I'm sure you know, I tell her she is a part of me, I adore her, and am always her forever friend.

I was told I came close to dying when I was born because the umbilical cord was wrapped around my neck as well.I was delivered in a small clinic in West Virginia. It apparently was God's will for me to live.....I have a 5 year old grand-daugther that I got blessed with by being the first to see her, hold her and feed her. Our bond is very strong to this day. When she gets sick, she cries for me. How special is that?

and both miracles.
Keep the correspondence coming via phone, or email or letters or cards....my Grandma's did not and I believe we both missed some special times because of this....you love her and she knows it so keep communicating!
Smiles from Brighteyes ;)
P.S. Give her a hug for me...even if its via the phone, OK?? We can feel and hear love through the voice so she will get the love and emotions....
