The Case of the Reappearing Blanket

--by mapabeek, posted Dec 6, 2007

Several years ago our oldest son was in a terrible car accident.  The head-on crash into a huge tree claimed one life and left five others critically injured.

I still remember each mind numbing day we spent in the critical care unit watching him cling to life. Hoping and praying he would come through the TBI and resulting coma.

Trying to get any sleep in that enviroment was nearly impossible.  I went into the family only waiting area to rest while my husband accompanied him to imaging for another CAT scan. The air conditioning had made the small room like a freezer, but as I looked around I saw a plaid blanket draped over the arm of a chair.  I tossed it across my lap and fell asleep. When I woke, I took the blanket to the nurses station lost and found basket.

The next time I went to take a nap I noticed it was back on the chair again.  So I snuggled up & again and slept like a baby.  Again, I returned it to the lost and found, and asked if anyone had come to claim it. They said no, it had been there since I left it the day before.  This same situation went on for the next several days.  When we were moved to the recovery floor, the same blanket was in the family waiting area.

After nearly three weeks, and many long days filled with waiting, hoping & prayers we were on our way home to continue his recuperation.  And to my surprise what was on the cart carrying his things?  That same fleece blanket!  I have no idea how it got there, except to truly believe that we had a guardian angel making sure that one weary mom had a warm blanket when she needed it most.  There was a family in the ICU who had lost their daughter in a similar car accident just before our son arrived.  I recall feeling at a loss of what to say or do for them.  I brought them some food & bottled water from the family lounge. Perhaps they knew what we were going to be facing?

Actually you have inspired me to possibly start a project like this, donating blankets to a nearby hospital for a waiting room. We've had to go to the emergency room twice when family members underwent unexpected injuries, and it certainly would be nice to have something comforting like that, especially since you never know how long you will be there. Thank you for sharing this wonderful story, and I wish you the best of luck with your son's recuperation! Thank God he has a wonderful mommy like you! :)
