Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Tomatoes for the community

--by seesee, posted Jun 5, 2015
Last year I grew tomatoes and like usual the bad one's that the bugs ate and the bird's nibbled i threw back into the dirt and covered them over, well the next spring i had tons of tomato plants blooming all over the place.

My Mother asked what could I do with them and I took a day to think it over. As hard as times are now, I try to find ways to " Help others and Pay it Forward", so i decided to re-pot each plant into it's own paper cup and place an ad on( www.MyFreeCycle.org )where people can place items for free to help others and the items wont go to the land fill
and create waste.

Paper cups from the local dollar store and a brick of CoCo Coir ( a miracle compost/ potting soil retains 80 to 90% water retention) Dehydrated from the local hydrophonics store. I made a Hot pink sign with free Tomato plants on one side a the freecycle web site address on the back.

In my ad I listed free Tomato plants and my location (a nice public location) and starting time of 12 noon and on until all gone.People were very kind and came from all over. One lady even cried because she just can't start plants. Others were amazed that some thing so simple could bring people together.

When I went home I thought about the whole experience and now I have decided this will be my way of giving back. I call it "GrowRich" (after my city) "The Food Project". Now I will expand my plants to have more vegatables this year before summer, and my paper cups are sprouting now as we speak.

I may not have much "BUT" I can feed a whole bunch of people for the price os a little dirt and some dollar store seed packets I can create = FOOD & LOVE for every body. :)
