Reaching Out in a Waiting Room
While I was waiting at the neurooncologist's office for my 3-month check-up on my brain cancer (it is inoperable, so they just monitor it), I noticed a nice older lady sitting in the waiting room, who seemed a little upset. I smiled at her and asked how her day was going. She came to sit next to me and tears started falling. She was just informed that her daughter had a new tumour growing in her brain. Although it may not seem like much to some people, I decided to share my story with her, hoping it would help her to realize that she is not alone. Purple Bag Full of Cheer
I received a call from my landlord about 2 weeks ago asking if I would talk to her friend. Her friend had just undergone a masectomy and was feeling low and overwhelmed. Since I have cancer also, she thought I could cheer her up.
I got a bright cheery purple bag with flowers and a bear on it. I put inspirational books from Dave Drevecky's website in the bag (he is amazing!), some lotion (nothing makes you feel better than a backrub!) and some places to help her out during this time. I talked to her and told her some days will be great, some days you just want to hide. Its great because she is now my friend too!
