12 Cents Short

I just experienced a moment that turned my entire day around, and had to tell all of you about it! I went to the cafeteria today to purchase my lunch, a fairly routine activity for me. But, today was different. I entered the line, ready to purchase my lunch. However, when I reached the cashier, I realized that I did not have a debit or credit card with me. So, I dug through different sections of my bag, looking for loose change. After a while, it became clear that, while I found most of the money I needed, I was still too short to make my purchase. I started looking around for people who may respond nicely to a request for a small amount of change. I thought about all the times we pass people on the street and say that we don't have anything to share. Would that happen to ... Read Full Story >>

Paying Forward a Pre-Paid Parking Space

A few days ago, I pulled into a pay-by-hour parking lot to run a few errands. I stood in line to pay for my parking space and was intercepted by a woman returning from her errands. "Excuse me," she said, "but if you would like to use my spot, I am leaving now." At first, I hesitated. I knew that I only needed the spot for 20 minutes, and she had paid for 2 hours. Finally, I accepted her offer to use the remaining time on her space.

My errand took a while longer than planned, so I ended up being grateful that I had some extra time on my parking space. However, I still had an hour left on the parking time. So, I waited in the garage for the next patron to enter. I drove up to the woman and offered her the remaining time on the ticket.  It felt good to pass the kindness along.

Crossing a Path with a Purpose

I was having one of those days where I felt like I was just going through the motions... tired, a bit bored, nothing on the agenda but work to be done.  I was in my car returning home from picking up lunch, and saw a woman standing with a sign at the intersection.  I could only make out two parts of the sign: the top said "Happy Holidays" and the bottom said "Help". At first, I just felt my spirits sink further, which was the last thing I wanted to feel. I watched her walk slowly by each of the cars. I realized that I had an extra piece of bread in the meal I had just purchased. I waited for her to approach my car, wondering if the light would stay red long enough for me to offer her my bread. The woman in the car in front of ... Read Full Story >>

Seizing the Opportunity to Give

About two months ago, I worked at a college student fair where we had over-estimated the food delivery by at least 500 sandwiches. It was clear that everyone had their fill, and plenty of food stood to go to waste.  A friend and I grabbed a few sandwiches to take to another co-worker and some to stock in our fridges for later, so that they wouldn't go to waste. As we walked up the hill, we met an elderly woman with large black shades and a cane. She asked us about the event happening down the hill.  As I started to tell her about the fair, I couldn't help but notice that I had several extra sandwiches in my hands.  Quickly, I offered her one of the sandwiches, to spare her the lengthy downhill walk.  Suddenly, a large smile appeared on her face, as she told us how happy she ...
