Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Last Day of April...but the RAOK's will Continue!

Day 30:
For my last RAOK of April I like to buy a stranger frozen yogurt on the last day of the month.
My wife and I entered the shop. It was empty. We started to get our treats. Then, in walked a teenage girl and her mom.
"Excuse me," I said to them. "I have been doing random acts of kindness for people each day this month. I would love it if you would let me pay for your yogurts."
They seemed a little shell-shocked, but were very receptive. We paid for their treats and gave them a kindness card. They were very happy.

📚 Helpers Of The Heart ❤️

Often a book will come into my life, just as I need, such as, “When Things Fall Apart, Heart Advice for Difficult Times,” by Pema Chodron. Walking into our library after our “road of woe” felt like returning to a dear sanctuary, where everything was shelved and orderly, waiting patiently to be discovered. And there, on the back wall, near the book sale room, was this treasure of wisdom. Since signing it out, I have been moving the volume around our home, reading a bit here and there, allowing the words to settle into the deeper me. Amidst the residual chaos it has given me clarity to find the threads of peace and begin to weave a new pattern. The book is due soon, so I ordered a copy for my home library, where it will be ready for another who might be in need. In fact, have someone in mind already with ... Read Full Story >>

Birthday Gift #10

☼ (Image by Silviarita from Pixabay.) Today's gift was to my friend Oscar in Portland who is unhoused. I got him a $50 Kroger card so that he can buy fresh fruits and veggies. Oscar and I have been talking a lot about gut health and how important nutrition is. I told him about our Cynthia Li's Brave New Medicine and Rich Roll's microbiome series on YouTube.   https://youtu.be/yjeS0Q-KDvc Oscar told me that it's really hard to get good food. Most of what is given out are stale, refined carbs. He's always grateful for the food, but he has an autoimmune disease so these kinds of foods are really making it worse. Now that spring is here, hopefully, he can get fresher produce. I told him about the book I'm reading by Will Bulsiewicz, MD called Fiber Fueled. I'm learning so much. Today is day 70 since I started learning to make meals just from plants. ... Read Full Story >>

Filling Buckets

We've read a couple of books about filling someone's bucket (we all have one and if you're mean, you remove some of the bucket's, but if you are kind, you fill someone's bucket which also fills your own).

Today a student gave me a kind note. Another wrote words of encouragement on a heart. And, a third gave me a bag of Hershey's Kisses. ❤️

Park Appreciation Day

Today was Parks Appreciation Day in our community and I was so pleased and excited to see so many people volunteering. It was especially great to see the many families volunteering together. Park appreciation day is a day to celebrate the wonderful places where memories are made and to give back to our community. Volunteers helped remove invasive weeds, pick up trash, and perform other light landscaping to “spring clean” neighborhood parks.

Kindness Card Ripple

💖Rajni Kindness Cards…..

My hubby carries these cards around with him and hands them out at our local park where he exercises each day. Today when he left our house to go to the park he met up with our neighbor and was able to share one with him.

Look what effect Rajni’s card had, in this text message I received from the neighbor:

“It just occurred to me that Harvey would make a great Pope. I was complaining to him about someone & In the midst of my whining, Harvey handed me a card with good thoughts. Took the wind out of my confrontational sails.”

(I must admit his reference to Harv/Pope gave me a good chuckle 🤣)

This is the card Harv gave him (shown below).

Thanks to Rajni for his kindness cards 🙏

Helping Ukrainian Refugees

I received this today from the Greater Goods charities and sent a donation. I had been concerned about the animals left behind in the crisis and this charity includes them. “Help provide nourishing meals and critical supplies to people and animals fleeing from attack in Ukraine.” “On February 24, Russia launched a large-scale military operation on neighboring Ukraine, invading the country on several fronts. The UN estimates that over one million Ukrainians have fled since the attack began, with that number expected to rise dramatically. The journey is daunting, with many Ukrainian families traveling for days without food. They need your help now. As the situation continues to evolve, Greater Good Charities is in contact with partners who are responding and working on the ground. Initially, we are partnering with World Central Kitchen and The International Fund for Animal Welfare to help people and pets affected by this crisis, with fresh food and ... Read Full Story >>

Students Brighten Day

Day 27:
Today was Administrative Assistant's Day. Every year, I have my students bring one flower so we can make a bouquet from the class, but most kids bring more.

Over the years, other classes have joined us, and this is what the school office looked like today. There were even more.

Somebunny Wants to Snuggle<3

Vesper, the rabbit I found last week, has morphed into the biggest snuggle bunny. It took about 48 hours. We wonder if she thinks she is a puppy. She will come sit on a lap and settle in, likes to be held by us, is eating and pooping just fine and we are besotted by her sweetness. I have become so used to my abused chinchilla trying to nip (but much progress has been made in becoming friends) that this friendly rabbit is blowing my mind. My partner said she fell from heaven and it does seem that way. Later in the week I had to get file folders and a few other office supplies at the dollar store. I let a teen girl with a can of soda go in front of me. She did not know the store had become the $1.25 Store and that there was a ten cent ... Read Full Story >>

Spring the Wealth

I stash all of my recyclable cans and bottles in a trash can until it's full. When I took in the recyclables I saw a man with A LOT more cansand bottles than I had.

I made an assumption that maybe this may be a way to supplement his income. I offered to add my cans and bottles to his. He'd be able to make a bit more money. He was pleased and accepted.

❤️ Kind Husband

💨 Extremely windy here in NYC today and it’s trash collection day as well, so everyone’s trash cans are rolling around in the street after they were emptied.

I saw my husband going around picking them up out of the street & bringing the cans back to the houses when he went out to go to the park just now. 😊Made me smile so.

Hope they stay put!!  Fingers crossed 🤞

An Amazing Dessert That We Never Tasted

I was at dinner last night with a good friend at an upscale restaurant celebrating some recent successes she had. There was a young boy at the table next to ours and my friend, a mother of 2 boys herself, commented how well-behaved and sweet the boy looked and how she wished she had a cupcake to give him. We were highly engaged in conversation on the topic of how to transform the economic and legal systems by creating a win-win-win scenario among all stakeholders from the earth to each person in a supply chain ("the Economics of Mutuality"), yet we couldn't help ourselves from peering over and admiring how well mannered he was, how he was not complaining or asking for some phone even though he was likely bored given he was the only child. So we decided to call our waiter and asked him to deliver a nice dessert to ... Read Full Story >>

Student Reconnects with Grade 3 Teacher

I got a call from Gustavo today. "Is this Leon Scott Baxter?" he asked. I asked him, "Gustavo who?" He told me his last name. "Where would I know you from?" It turned out Gustavo was in my first class 25 years ago when he was a third grader. I ask my students to write letters to themselves and I hold them until they turn 18. Then, I send them their letters along with a letter from me. Gustavo, now 32, had just moved to a new home with his family. When unpacking boxes he found the letter to himself as well as my letter. He shared them both with his 14-year old daughter and she asked, "Do you think your teacher is still alive?" "Probably," answered Gustavo. "You should call him (I had included my number in the letter)." And, lo and behold, I answered. There we were talking about 3rd grade from ... Read Full Story >>

Responding to a Request for Help

Today I was stopped by a lady who asked me if I could help her find her mobile phone, which she had lost. She later told me that she had turned 80 this year. I did my best, searching in and around her car, her bags, and checking with the cafe where she visited earlier. I also tried calling her phone. Unfortunately, we could not find it. I kept her company until she calmed down and let her use my phone to call a friend. I helped her put her walking frame into her car and offered made a few suggestions for a further search including calling the cafe again to check if the  phone has turned up and contacting the phone provider who might be able to locate the phone.  I felt a bit like I let her down, but I hope I was able to provide a little comfort and company during her stressful ... Taking Time to Fill the Well of Goodwill

The Little Critter Crew rescue I foster for can find its people overwhelmed. One of the co-founders lost a rat she was carefully tending through an injury. The rattie was so sweet and gentle, despite this injury. Sadly, the rat did not make it and this person was /is so sad and overwhelmed with her work.
Animal rescue brings you to your knees, over and over.
I sent her a supportive email and we had a chat. She is wisely taking some time off — they are always so inundated with animals. And now with Easter coming, there will be a huge influx of rabbits coming.
I reminded her of all the good she does and how grateful I am to help them in small ways. Fostering Mz Pancake is such a delight.

Uplifted by the Toothbuckle Team

I have talked before about the lovely ladies who run Toothbuckle. The weekend after I was diagnosed with cancer, I sent them some pictures. Last Saturday, I received a reply. One of them had lost their father shortly before Easter and so they apologised for not replying sooner.

They are always so kind and Ali who wrote the letter this time, empathised with me and then added if there was any way they could help to let them know. I was overwhelmed by their kindness. This afternoon I replied and told them how uplifted I was by their email.
