Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Day 3 Of 21: Book Fever

Okay I can do this! I love the written word: books! I love to share my love of books to all that will listen to me drone on and on about my favorite authors. With today's challenge in mind, I bought my niece a Kindle book that she has been wanting. I also loaned a Kindle book to a friend of mine, whom I am trying to convince that reading is a good thing.

If you have a chance and haven't read her work yet, I recommend picking up a Cathy Lamb book. My two favorites are The Last Time I Was Me and Julia's Chocolates. They are wonderful reads, touching and very true to life!

Book sharing

Day 3: We saw a local play last night and a friend said she had never read the book. I had a copy so I left it on her bench this morning. The book is Tuesdays with Morrie. (I was trying to share a picture of the book I left on a friends bench, but could not figure out how to do it.)

Salads And Books

Today, I brought in some Hawaiian Salad to my physical therapy group. I also found a book from my childhood days and left it at my dentist's office reception area. In the book there was a note that mentioned how much this book meant a lot to me as a child and "it is yours free". As I was waiting in the reception area I noticed someone reading the note and glancing at the pages. It was encouraging to see this happen. Thank you so much for the idea of practicing kindness.

An Introduction To Sherlock Holmes

One of my school friends had a copy of the Complete Sherlock Holmes. I still remember the books with a red jacket. I also remember very well the easy time, sitting at his house and just reading those stories.

I wrote him a note today thanking him for introducing me to Sherlock Holmes. Thanking him for the easy hours spent at his home hanging about and enjoying each others' company. The friends, whose homes you can walk into without advance notice, are special!

Two Days Of Kindnesses - Not Big, But Good

Yesterday, I texted a fellow mom at my child's school to let her know I saw her daughter when I was dropping off my child. I told her that her daughter looked so lovely. The mom replied that I had made her day!

Today, I traveled out of state to visit a friend that I haven't seen in a long time. She's going through a tough time, so we're spending the weekend together to cheer her up.

A Lakota Prayer

Teach me how to trust my heart, my mind, my intuition,
My inner knowing, the senses of my body,
The blessings of my spirit.
Teach me to trust these things so that I may enter
My sacred space and love beyond my fear,
And thus walk in balance
with the passing of each glorious sun.

Kindly Quotations

Today I wrote a number of joyful and inspirational quotations on sticky notes.  Then walked around my neighborhood and put them on bus shelters, Metrocard dispensers, buildings, corner posts, etc. Here are a few of the quotations:

Scatter joy!

(Ralph Waldo Emerson) You were born to be real, not to be perfect.

Hey, you! You are loved! Okay, go on with your day.

From contentment with little comes happiness. (African proverb)

Your dream doesn't have an expiration date. Take a deep breath, and try again.

Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have. (Hyman Judah Schachtel)

One joy scatters a hundred griefs. (Chinese proverb)

I hope they bring a few smiles to people's faces!

Book Gift Becomes Story Gift

As a writer, I decided that I wanted to do something more personal for day three's Book Giveaway challenge. So I printed out one of my original fairytales that I wrote, The Rose King. I rolled it up like a scroll, bound it with a red ribbon, nestled a dried rose under the bow. I left it in a nearby "pop-up library" outside a restaurant on a busy street.

I feel like I've had a happy secret all day.

I decided not to wait and see who chooses it; that would be cheating. I am curious as to how long it will take someone to collect it, though. I left a note on it that says, "For you. Yes, YOU!" so I hope someone does decide to take a chance on this not-quite-book.

It is a story about kindness, redemption, and generosity, so I thought it aligned with the challenge perfectly.

"Live beautifully."

Gift of a Book

One of my favorites book is The Notebook. I went to Tampa General Hospital coffee shop today and I sat in the patio by this lady who told me she is married to her high school sweetheart for 43 years . He is sick with cancer. I gave her the book and told her they reminded me of the characters in the book. I wrote a little note that said: "may you always remember the love and wonderful journey you created together."

Soccer Team's Gift

Today, my family was given the opportunity to do an act of kindness. My son's soccer team was invited to a home for children with complex physical disabilities to help celebrate the 14th birthday of one of the residents. This boy is from Burundi, Africa where soccer is very popular.

All the children got wheeled out to the back yard and my son's team played an exhibition game for them to watch. The team gave the birthday boy a team jersey and a birthday card signed by all the players. We all got to meet the boy's family and have a tour of the home.

It was a gift for everyone involved - the birthday boy and his family, the soccer team, my son, my husband and I. I left there with such a feeling of warmth and love and pride in our boys.

That feeling stayed with me through the rest of the afternoon and shone through in all of my interactions - with the check out person at the grocery story, the man walking his dog on the street and the old friend I ran into in the supermarket.

I was even inspired to buy and leave a box of raisinets and a smile card on a windshield of a car parked in the supermarket parking lot.

Story of kindness from a friend

This is from a friend:

"So yesterday I had a hard time thinking of an act of kindness so I went with paying for a stranger's coffee. Today's personal challenge was kindness not involving money. Initially I couldn't think of anything but then I got to work and the ideas started flowing:

1) sent an email to a co-worker I don't care much for and paid him a very genuine compliment and encouraged him to apply for an internal promotion

2) invited my boss to lunch next week just to show gratitude (ok that involves money however it was the act).

3) while my colleague was in another room teaching, I quietly entered her classroom and cleaned her white board. She's very small in stature and can't reach it well. Just sharing ideas. This is fun!"

Sharing At AA

Today I shared my story at my home group Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. Then I stayed after the meeting to talk to two other members about what I had shared.

I talked to a lady who got her one-year-sober medallion. She thanked me and said she had needed to hear everything I said. I hope it helps her continue with her recovery. I also talked to a young man who was struggling with the idea of God's will versus his will.

I had the same struggle when I first got sober, so I shared with him how I dealt with my feelings and have developed a much closer relationship with my higher power.

I hope it helps him with his struggle to get clean.

Cleaning Up With A Good Heart

My family and I went to the Mall of America during the peak of the holiday shopping Season. We were having a meal in one of the food courts - and it was packed solid. People were standing waiting for tables to free up.  Once we found one I sat watching a member of staff hurriedly clearing and cleaning tables as soon as they became available. This man was not an athletic young buck. He was probably in his mid-to-late fifties and a bit obese. None of that slowed him down one bit!  As I watched I was appalled at the lack of consideration people had when it came to cleaning up after themselves. They would just leave their garbage, spilled drinks, ketchup smears, and more. He never batted an eyelid at this and never stopped smiling and saying, "Enjoy your day!" to everyone he met.  I was almost moved to tears.  As my ... Read Full Story >>

Soap Story

The washrooms at university do not have soap, and a friend and I felt that this was a very unhygienic practice. So, we decided to initiate a small project where we would place hand wash in as many washrooms as we can, with little notes pasted on the washroom walls.

We went to a store and bought loads of hand wash and refills, and began placing them in the washrooms near our classrooms. We've provided an e-mail id in our little notes, and told students to inform us when the hand wash becomes empty, and we will refill them within 24 hours.

The reactions from those who are using the hand wash has been very pleasing. We decided to remain anonymous, however there is a great deal of speculation going on, and that's exciting.

It's a wonderful way to serve, and this idea emerged in my head, while attending a Moved By Love retreat recently. I am so grateful to my friend for helping me implement my idea.

Being A Good Friend

Yesterday, I spent time with my good friend, her family, and friends for a couple of hours at her father's viewing. I gave her a shoulder to cry on a few times and interacted with many there. I cannot imagine losing my father and dread the day that comes. I have offered for my friend to call or text or even show up at my house whenever she needs.

A Day For Helping Others

On Thursday, September the 12th, I stayed an extra 30 minutes at work, to help out. After work, I took my grandchildren to the park and farmer's market to play. I bought them pizza and ice cream, and carried them when they fell and got hurt.

Black Light Fun

I am helping to plan a fundraiser event. In one week, I'll be teaching a black light Zumba class with all donated money going to leukemia – lymphoma. It should be so fun, I'm excited and I feel blessed and honored to be in a position to help.
