Pancakes Followed By Pancakes
My husband and I enjoyed breakfast twice today!
The first time was at 6:45 a.m.when we served pancakes, fresh peaches, and homemade syrup to our dear neighbors who were flying out early to start a 9-month bike trip across Europe.
Then at 9:30 a.m. we served a fresh round of the exact same meal to our close friends who were on their way out of town to get married in another state.
Afterward, my husband and I joked about finding someone else to invite for elevenses, but at that point I don't think we could have eaten anymore pancakes!

The Patient Patient
I had been waiting in the doctor's reception area for more than an hour and was getting little restless!
I saw this frail lady trying to open the door to leave. I got up right away, opened the door, and took her out to the bus stop. As I was helping her climb the steps onto the bus the driver asked for a dollar. She was ready with the money in her hand but, before he could take it, I handed him a dollar of mine!
The lady looked puzzled at first but then her eyes showed her gratitude. She thanked me several times. I just gave her a big hug and big smile!
The driver just looked at me - and then smiled too.
I returned to my seat in the reception area, smiling, and waited for my turn like a good patient ... patiently!

Elgar In The Rush Hour
I have been absolutely exhausted since I started my new teaching job in the UK (after 10 years in Australia) and I was definitely at a low ebb driving home today. I had spent eleven hours at work, it was raining, and the rush-hour traffic was so slow.
I saw these poor people sitting at a junction, unable to get into the main stream. So I made a gap and let three cars in. The look of relief on their faces was immediate. They flashed their lights and waved in appreciation as they took their places in front of me.
The good feeling was only slightly marred by the car behind me honking his horn at me, but I chose to ignore him!

Auto Journey To Happines
I made one auto-rickshaw driver happy by asking him where he wanted to go and buying him some food when we got there!
I paid for the journey and the food. Hopefully this little diversion will make him happy and that happiness will be passed on to his other passengers.

My first ever random act of kindness
I stumbled across Kindspring.org two days ago, and read the stories posted here for hours. They moved and inspired me so much that I just knew I had to be a part of this. I am a college student and work at the library here on campus, so I was able to print out dozens of Smile Cards and I spent over an hour cutting them all out. One of my "primary targets" that I came up with during my brainstorming was McDonald's, because the area around my college is economically depressed and I figured most of the people going to the McDonald's were probably strapped for cash. Unfortunately I don't have a car and I didn't know when I'd be able to have the opportunity to do some random acts of kindness there. As luck would have it that very night one of my friends asked me to go to ... Read Full Story >>

Her Human Pack
One of my co-workers brings her dog into work with her everyday.
This animal companion of my friend has expanded her "pack" to include everyone in the office. She is not a young dog and has recently been under the weather. I just found out she has not been eating and is generally lethargic. The vet can't seem to track down the cause of what is happening so there is a lot of sadness surrounding this.
I had brought some left over steak in today for lunch and gave what was left to our animal friend. It was the first time she had eaten in three days.

Meals For A Working Mom
I have been watching kids after school for a single mom who just got a job after so many months of searching.
I just made a huge pot of chicken soup and a pot of chili and divided them up in containers for freezing. Then I wrote a note saying, "Some help with dinner for when things are a little hectic until you get back into the daily routine. Good luck with the new job!"
I plan to deliver them when I drop her kids off after she finishes work.

Whisky And Chocolate
I listened as a woman told me how her father, who is almost 100 years old, is a full-time career for his 96 year old wife.
I told her I thought that was wonderful and asked, "What does your father do to indulge himself a little?" She told me he likes a drop of whisky and also enjoys chocolate.
Now, I didn't know his name, or where he lives, but I went out and bought whisky, chocolate, and a jar of malt whisky marmalade. Then I gave them to a family member to pass to him.
On the day I decided to go out and buy the gifts I won more than the equivalent cost in Premium Bonds!

A Ride To The E.R.
I took my daughter's pregnant friend who's having a lot of trouble with her blood pressure, blood sugar, water retention, and so on, to the emergency room last night. She has been admitted again.
I wish they would just let her stay. She's in her seventh month. She has no car and doesn't know anyone (except us) who has a car. She takes the bus to the hospital whenever she can, but that's not the best way if you are in a hurry.
At least she's in good spirits and she knows she can call us.
I also ran and got my daughter supper while she stayed with her friend. And, later, my husband went to pick my daughter up once her friend had been admitted.

A Small Change With Small Change
Someone posted a note on the vending machine at work about the change they lost in the machine. I believe they were hoping the vending maintenance person might give them this amount back when they come to fill the machine.
So, I preempted the vending guy, took a Smile card, taped the "lost" money to it, and then taped the card to the note on the machine.
It may be a small thing, but I believe every good effort adds beauty and kindness to the world - like a little sprinkle of glitter!

An Unexpected Treat(ment)
Today I made up a luscious face cream for a friend who is housebound. I also took my treatment couch round and massaged her feet!
She was not expecting me and I had already said I was too busy - but I made the time to do it and it worked out fine.
Her smiles and relaxed mood after the treatment made it a special occasion.

The Big 4-0
I requested forty Smile cards for an up-coming milestone. When they arrived I spent the first part of the day preparing for forty acts of kindness. On my very first stop, at the local frozen yogurt shop, I purchased a few gift cards to give to any kids we met. When the woman behind the counter heard my plan she gave me two extra gift cards for free! Next I headed over to the florist and picked up eighteen roses. Then I went to the supermarket to pick up some Starbucks and iTunes gift cards as well as some chocolate, gum, and candy. I brought the loot home and my husband and I attached Smile cards to each item. Then we grabbed the kids and we were off! The first stop was a busy supermarket parking lot. My kids and I handed out eighteen roses to women we met coming out of the store. ... Read Full Story >>

A Suitcase Of Love
I was looking after a foster child for a little while to give his foster mother a respite break.
They stay across town from me and instead of having her collect him when the break was over I offered to drive him home. As a surprise, and to help them out, I secretly filled his suitcase with new clothes.

Summer Kindness
There are summers that pass by quickly and with hardly any major events to remember. This summer, on the other hand, it will be a summer to be remembered for doing what makes my heart happy - being of service to others!
I made new friends, sent love letters to strangers, gave surprise presents, baked cakes to give away, looked after babies and teenage girls, listen with my heart to the life challenges some friends are going through, helped others in need of a helping hand ... The summer is not over yet and I expect many more kindness adventures.
I like to start my day asking the Universe " How can I be of service today?" and then I go with the flow.

A Family Wound Healed
An estranged cousin contacted me asking for my friendship on Facebook.
I am her only cousin, and a step-cousin at that. She was so afraid I wouldn't accept her friendship request because of a falling out her mom had with my uncle.
I accepted the invitation and suggested we meet up for dinner the next time I am in her city.

Today I Will Make ... My Parent Proud
I gave my daughter a Kindness Deck when she went off to college this year.
I told her to take a look whenever she felt like it.
Well, she must have looked because I just saw a Facebook post with a picture of her in her room. And behind her, on her dry-board, was written, "Today I will make someone smile!"
It was a very proud moment.

Random Acts Of Kindness At Reagan
Yesterday on the plane I gave my exit row seat to a very tall man. I didn't need the leg room and I could tell he did.
The bus out to the runway (at Reagan National Airport) was very crowded so I held a man's briefcase on my lap so he could hold on where he was standing.
Small gestures but they made other people's lives a little easier - and mine a little happier.

The Power Of A Friendly Chat
Last week I met up with a friend whose mother had died.
We had a chat and I shared few jokes and we had a good laugh. Just a chat very informal. Laughter is not such a bad medicine. We ended up making each other happy.
No agenda. Only the sheer joy of living!

Planting Smiles
Our elderly neighbor was admiring the Celosia plants we just put in our yard saying she would love to get some for her flower bed.
Later at the store, when passing the plants, my daughter smiled and suggested we get them for her.
Today we woke up early, sneaked over, planted them, and left a Smile Card. She was so thrilled when she saw them and immediately started telling us all the ideas she had for paying it forward.

My Smile Card Story
About six years ago a kind person came up to me and handed me a smile card. I thought it was the coolest thing ever!
It was pinned proudly on my bulletin board so that I would be reminded of that kind person every day.
Today I finally gained the courage to check out the website on the back, and was not disappointed. That one kind person led me to lots of other kind people and has inspired me to give someone else the same experience I was given six years ago.
