Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Holding On

I was out shopping today and ran into a very old lady who I had known years ago. She doesn't speak much English , so I nod a lot. and smile. What I did understand was her husband has had to go into care. I was holding her hands and she started to tear up. Next thing she threw herself into my arms and cried her heart out. She is heart broken to be without her husband. we were sitting on a bench and she stayed in my arms for at least 5 minutes and I thought she would break if I let her go. I just kept quiet and held her. She finally moved away and I was nearly crying. I wiped her face and kissed her on her checks. She kept saying I am sorry. But I stopped her and just smiled. She then was calm and I felt her ... Read Full Story >>

#LoveItForward

Today I'm sending some letters to people who are to receive love from the ones who are registered at a project called #loveitforwardlist. This is how it works: The volunteers receive weekly requests to send letters to at least two people who are facing rough situations (e.g., loss of a close person, a severe disease, etc.). The envelopes can be filled with whatever the volunteer thinks is going to cheer that person up. It could be an inspiring message, a beautiful drawing, origami...

It has been about two months since I joined it and it felt so good to realize that it doesn't take much to be kind and helpful to others. I feel blessed by the fact that I'm able to participate week after week. Now I believe that being kind means we're also receiving kindness from life. Life is kind when it gives us opportunities to express unconditional love towards others. I'm deeply thankful to life for its kindness.

Gratitude Walk

I went on a gratitude walk and said 'thank you' to whatever caught my eye: flowers, the bus driver, sunshine, the elevator, my legs for carrying me around, friendly people at cleaners. This also led me to meet a new person at the bus stop!

Kindness links growing

I used kindness links in my 3rd and 4th grade classrooms. Each time I saw a student being kind, they would write their kind act on the link and add it to the chain (the chain hung up in the classroom).

It was awesome to see how long our chain was by the end of the school year!

Onyx

I want to share an incident that happened to me yesterday that serves as proof that there are good people in this world. I have a poodle, Onyx, who is 4 and will be 5 on Halloween. Yesterday my daughter was walking him through our neighborhood and there was a couple riding bikes with their 2 dogs on leashes. One of the dogs saw Onyx, broke away from the woman on the bike and attacked Onyx. The man on the bike immediately tried to restrain his dog and got bit in the process. My daughter rushed home with Onyx in her arms and we immediately got in the car to take him to the vet. The man, his name is Alex wanted to come because he wanted to make sure Onyx would be okay. The outcome is that Onyx will be okay; he needed stitches on either side of his body ... Read Full Story >>

Olga

I visited Olga today, the elderly lady I visit in a home who has absolutely no one else but me. And you know what? It's humbling. I walked in there with my own petty problems but walked out feeling so grateful for them. They are nothing in comparison to what she is going through.

Lately she is so confused, frightened and in pain. I arrived to find her covered in food. She was a mess. Simple things like wiping your own mouth we take for granted!!

So today I am so grateful to have stepped out of my own sorry self and into the life of another. Because when you do you will find that more often than not, your problems are nothing in comparison.

Supermarket Kindness

As we were putting our shopping onto the conveyor, another customer appeared behind us, and since he only had 2 items I left him go in front. The guy who'd been in front of us let him move straight to the front of the queue. :-) Simple acts!

Adult Coloring Night

Yesterday was adult coloring night at the public library! My adopted mom, Esther, and I attended last night and had a blast. :) All art supplies were provided, with lots of interesting pages to color...plus cookies and light beverages!

We noticed a young woman at the next table that only had a small packet of colored pencils and she was alone, so we invited her to color with us. :)

She has a 9 month old baby and thought it would be a good night out, especially since she recently lost job...and there might be opening where Esther lives. How interesting this world is, my friends, when open to the opportunities presented by the Universe.

I am enjoying the colorful masterpiece of life lately! Use all the colors and enjoy, my kind friends.

Getting to know someone who gets overlooked

Instead of just saying "hi" and dropping change into the cup of the fellow who begs near our grocery store, I stopped to visit with him. I've learned his name and a bit of his story. Since I was going into the store, I asked him if there was anything he'd like. His face lit up and he requested some fried chicken thighs and potato salad from the deli. I brought out his requested items. I then got the warmest thank you that I've ever received.

Truck Driver Kindness

As we were heading into town yesterday on little wiggly roads, we came up behind a huge heavily laden lorry which was crawling on the steep stretches. The very kind driver used his elevated position to signal to us when it was safe to pass, and gave us as much space as he could. I wonder if he realized how much he lifted my mood with that small act.

The thrift store I like to frequent prints 10% coupons on their receipts for your next purchase. I happened to have 2 old receipts today, so I left one with the cashier to give to another costumer together with a SMILE card. Then I gave the cashier a Mindy peace dove. It made her so happy!

Delivery room kindness in the midst of pain

On the delivery room, hours before my childbirth , a woman next to me is being induced by labor pain as well. She is banging in the bedside from labor pain and is groaning. I heard she has been in pain for the last 24 Hrs. So, in the middle of my own labor hours, I invited her to try and relax and share with her that I believed everything would be okay. We will all to have our babies no matter what. The next day, we got our new babies.:) and happily looked at each other with victory. ;).

Bravery Over Bullying

I just finished watching the DVD "A Brave Heart: the Lizzie Velasquez Story". Lizzie is 26 years old now.  She was born with an undiagnosed syndrome. Around age 24-25, she finally got an accurate diagnosis, I don't remember the specific name, but it is a combination syndrome with one part meaning she has vision problems, bone issues and a problem with the large aorta in her heart. The other part means she cannot gain weight. This combination means she looks different from everyone around her. Her family never treated her like she was anything different than any of them. But in elementary school, the bullying began. With the support of family and some in the schools, Lizzie was accepted by other students and ended up doing well in school. However, in high school, she was on Facebook and saw a website about the ugliest woman in the world. It was about her. Her ... Read Full Story >>

Poodle love for the elderly

I walked into the local basement day centre for the elderly with my sweet-natured, beyond amazing poodle, and asked if they would appreciate my coming regularly with my Pup for the benefit of a few people,  just briefly. They loved the idea.

In particular there is an 80-yr-old blind gent who lost his beloved dog and often asks, "Can't we ever have a dog in here?" I look forward to meeting him on Tuesday, the only day he comes to the centre. And meeting any one else who wants a little cuddly pet hello. It is just part of my daily walk going by there and hardly any trouble at all. I will come back here and give updates as to how it works out. Wish me luck---and of course, Pup!!!

Thank You Uncle Sam!.

Thank you Uncle Sam! It felt really good to give back today! I donated $100.00 to Best Friends Animal Charities and $100.00 to a local 12 year old battling Cystic Fibrosis, whose name is Brayden. It is Brayden's dream to find a cure for CF so other little children don't have to deal with the pain of this disease. When he was hospitalized at a young age, he was so upset that little infants had the same disease that he had. It broke his heart to see the infants going through the procedures that he's been through all of his life. From that point on he wanted to raise money for research. He wants to raise 1 Million Dollars and today, I'm happy to be able to help him. He makes rose pins and jewelry to help raise money. Learning to Be Kind in 2nd grade

I am 2nd grade teacher and our class watched the kind video and it is very powerful. Today we are to help each other by picking up a book if it falls, helping someone if they fall and saying, "are you okay?". Respecting others. Learning and being quiet until it is time to speak and not interrupting.

Discerning between the 'To Do' and the 'Need To"

I am loving lately how much I am able to discern between what is important and what is not. Choosing love and the path that leads to the highest of good.

Take this morning for example. I wanted to be up early and out of the house at a decent time. I had lots to do today and starting earlier and getting out as soon as possible was a must.

Until ....

I saw my boys setting up a game of snakes and ladders. And right then I knew what the right thing to do was. Sit down and play with them, so I did. *My plans* could wait 20 minutes.

Those 20 minutes were much better spent enjoying my babies.
