Stories of Kindness from Around the World

Taco Tuesday

Today is Taco Tuesday and I had just ordered my daughter and myself tacos when a little boy dropped his drink and it spilled all over the floor. He started to cry and I could see his mom had her hands full carrying food and drink, so I told the boy it would be OK and the woman behind the counter gave me a new cup to fill up. He stopped crying.

His mom did not speak English so we just smiled mom smiles and
nodded mom nods at each other.

Remembering Each Person's Special Day

I make a birthday cake for every person in our school, from the janitors to our head of school. We work in an international school in China, and many of us are a very long way from home. There are almost 60 people that work here. Good thing their birthdays are spread out throughout the year! :-)

A simple act of kindness during the holidays

Was the recipient of a surprise act of kindness this holiday season. A friend of mine had seen me in the grocery store a month ago. The store is doing a promotion where you get stickers for every $10 you spend which can be used to "buy" kitchen items. She was ahead of me in line and the cashier asked if she was collecting the stickers. She looked back at me and asked if I was. I told her I was, so she collected them and gave them to me.
A few weeks later we got a Christmas card from their family and attached to it was a bunch of the stickers. Apparently, she continued to collect them for me and sent them for the holidays.

Not really random, but definitely a surprise that I appreciated.

A dog returns home after six-months and rebuilding after a tornado

In the past 24 hours, I have been gifted with two amazing opportunities for kindness. The first happened yesterday. I was on my way home after running some errands and saw a small dog running across the last three lanes of the very busy street I was traveling on. He scampered off into the neighborhood, so I went off in search of him in hopes I could reunite him with his owners. After a bit of a cat and mouse game, he finally decided I was worthy of at least a little of his trust and came close enough to me for me to grab him. After taking him to be scanned for a microchip, I learned that he had disappeared eight months ago from his owners who lived a half an hour away. As I had some free time before my other commitments, I drove him back to his rightful owners. ... Read Full Story >>

Kindness of a little girl

Tonight at work a little girl at dinner started chatting to me excitingly. She showed me her new shoes, dress, and her most favourite ... two big shiny sparkling dress rings.

I told her much I loved them and how beautiful she looked. Later during my shift she called me over to her table and begun pulling off one of her rings. Once she had it off she then placed it into my hand and said, "Here, this is for you. It's my favorite but I want you to have it. I know you will take very good care of it for me and will love it as much as me".

I just about cried. Is that not one of the sweetest things! Mostly so because it was her favorite, and only an hour earlier she was telling me how much she loved it and had only just received it.

Children. They really do live from their hearts and it's something to be admired and cherished. And the world is a better place because of them. Blessed we all are for the daily reminders of love that our children give us ♡

Possibilities on a tough street

Late last night Stewart and I got all the Christmas cards we have written. They say "Merry Christmas from a neighbor". We put these in a street that is not a very happy place. A lot of problems on this street. We decided to put one in each mailbox. I am hoping that this will bring a little peace, happiness and joy to some of these people. We could also be starting world war 3. But I live in hope. Not for war!!! But for perhaps a reaching hand to each other.

Reaffirming family love with my grown son

Hi Everyone, I just wanted to tell you that my son rang me to thank me for the phone call and email I sent him yesterday. He was grateful for reminding him on how the small stuff is not worth worrying about and to be thankful for his life and all the good things in it.

I felt very proud of him for recognizing that he had forgotten the joy and goodness in his life. I also recognize that I am now relating to my grown children in a very different way. More loving, positive and kind. I am a softer more approachable women now and I think they a responding to the new me. The change has been noticed.

What more could I ask for? A special thank you to all of here on this lovely site of KS. You helped me become this way. Big hugs of love to all of you.

Steaming hot chocolate

I just gave a travel mug full of steaming hot chocolate to the propane delivery person. It's snowing outside and they are all working extra hard to service their customers for the holidays.  I am grateful for men and women who are working today to ensure the safety and well-being of my community.

Coffee Shop Kindness

I make small handicrafts at home. The other day I put together a small token piece and a handwritten card with a message of prayers and good wishes along with a SMILE card.

Then I went to a nearby coffee shop and dropped the packet at the counter asking them to give it to any customer sitting alone. I don't know who got it but the person is constantly in my prayers. And I know I made the service team at the counter smile in excitement. Feeling happy.

Kindness Abounding

Good afternoon! My name is Lindsey Gibson and my son is in the NICU at Northside Forsyth. We received a gift, a yellow knitted swaddle blanket, and just wanted to say thank you so much. It is beautiful and I know my son Cole will love it. It is so wonderful to know there is a community of support surrounding our family during this time.

Thank you again and Merry Christmas!
- Lindsey Gibson

My response:
Hi, Lindsey! I am ever so happy to hear from you! Congratulations on having Cole and may all the love we have put into every stitch on this gift for him project all through his life in many many blessings!

We (Lily, Valentina and I) wish you a wonderful Christmas and may 2016 bring you and your loved ones lots of happiness....

With love,
Sandy

(Our first response to our baby cocoon and hats for newborns at the hospital! This is a pic of a baby in Xmas attire, not the crochet I've done...just to celebrate it!)

A Lesson In Receiving, We Too Give

I recently ran a support group for people who have family members with mental health conditions and who need support. It was our second meeting. However, no one showed up who had a family member with a mental health condition.

Albeit, two students did show up who were interested in working with people with mental health conditions. These two students gave of their time to allow me to share with them how the support group works. They let me practice my group facilitation skills. This was so helpful for me! I guess I gave them the gift of giving to someone else too!
I want to remember it is very important to be able to receive help from others, with thankfulness and gratitude, in addition to giving.

He Received A Caring Note and Was Touched Beyond Words

This past Christmas I dropped a little note to a co-worker who was going through his first holiday since the deaths of t
wo family members. I just wanted him to know I was thinking about him. The first anniversaries of a death are always the hardest. They make you feel alone and cut off from everyone and everything. I wanted him to know he wasn't alone.

He wrote back and said that I touched him more than I could ever know. It's good to remember that sometimes it's the smallest of gestures that have a big impact. Blessings on everyone on this site, all of you who have come together to make the world a better place. I hold all of you in my heart tonight.

A Mother's Patience and Love Offered Her Daugther Many Lessons

I helped my daughter to become unstuck as she begins the 'teen years' and projects become overwhelming. Our lesson was patience, organization and understanding that it is OK to ask for help.

I can't (won't) "do" the project, but I can help to create an easier journey for her. It's a learning lesson for me as well. It's easy to be reactive when others are struggling. It is easy to celebrate when things go well.

My hope is that I can help her to see big projects can be broken down into smaller more manageable ones. That we are all here to help each other. I truly enjoyed the smile she had when together we completed part of the project and she could see the light was truly at the end of the tunnel. The project isn't done, but she is no longer stuck in the process.

Reward Found in Kindness

Today while at work, the guys who were staying late got pretty backed up as there were a number of customers they had to serve. I decided to stay around and wash the dishes for them so they could leave quicker. They were grateful I helped them out, and it was rewarding.

Presence was all that was needed

I gave someone I just met a hug, as she had shared with me her pain over the loss of a child. Her baby died 8 years ago, and she has trouble talking about it.  I'm glad she was able to talk to me. I hope I was able to comfort her at least in a small way.

A Crafty Way to Give

As I mentioned yesterday, our Friends of the Library sponsored a craft day where kids (and adults( could make gifts to be given to senior citizen homes. Several people have asked what we made. We had crafts set up for different ages and abilities. Most of the crafts were useful items that the seniors could use. These included the cute reindeer soaps shown below, "cupcake socks" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1_ueqdY070); book marks that the kids colored and yarn wrapped cans (for pencil holders, etc.) . The quilting group that meets at the library made lap quilts and helped the kids turn them into "fidget mats" for memory care patients (http://www.patchworkposse.com/fidget-quilts/). There was also a station for making stamped Christmas Cards and one for making pine cone Christmas trees which the kids could either donate or take home.

Contageous Kindness Was Paid Forward

Today I needed an eyebrow wax so went into a quick walk in place. It was $15. And as I went to pay and hand over my $20note I remembered a man who comes into work and often allows me to keep the change. So today as I paid I told this young girl to not worry about the change, turned around, and walked out of there.
Kindness spreads. It's contagious. That man at my work inspired me without realizing it. And you too all inspire me daily without realizing it ♡

A Dog Lover Saves Two Lives

I'm a huge advocate of 'adopt don't buy'  when it comes to owning pets. When I had two friends both looking for dogs, I strongly encouraged them to go to the pound (our local pound is a high kill pound) or shelters first. One friend has four young boys and has found a puppy (best fit for their family but they were willing to get an adult dog) and my neighbor is adopting an older dog in need of a lot of TLC due to neglect.

These friends don't know each other, but have ended up adopting from the same shelter and have met each other's dogs! I have been and met both of the dogs as the second opinion for both friends. I'm so happy! My friends have got new family members, and two dog's lives have been saved. And this is from the pound where I regularly donate toys and treats, so I'm super happy!!

She Changed Her World Lens and It Changed Her Perspective

It snowed here yesterday, I began to think of all the problems the snow causes. Then I told myself to stop! All of a sudden the snow became gorgeous and everyone talked of the beauty of it. Sometimes the weather gives me a way to griping, but today it was my testimony in the way I perceive it.
