Stories of Kindness from Around the World

No Bus Fare Needed

There was a young woman on my bus today who did not have bus fare and she needed to go 8 stops.

The bus driver told her that she could only go two stops and she would have to get off the bus.

My stop was the very next stop; so when I was getting off the bus I very quietly told the bus driver that I was paying for her ride and gave him the fare.

Kindness Is Healing

Kindness is healing! I am proof.

I had been going through some health issues for a few months and looking forward to April was a bit daunting for me. I was afraid that doing a RAOK a day for a month would be difficult, when I was still trying to focus on my own health.

I had been getting better when April came around, but, although I have read it numerous times, I found that when you do for others, you are also doing for yourself.

I am absolutely sure that I have healed faster as a result of being kind to others.

Returning The Hospital Ward

I had to return to the hospital for a check up. It wasn't visiting hours (they're really strict) but I figured that enough nurses would recognize me that I'd be able to talk my way back onto the ward I'd been on as a patient. When I was in there, I was in a little ward with just three beds.
The older lady at the end of the ward was there when I arrived and still there when I left, with no visitors or anyone to talk to all that time.

I thought it would be a good bet she'd still be there so I made a little card and took it in to her (the peace dove is from KindSpring.org member Mindy, via KS member LeoLady, they do get about. ).

I had a chat with some of the nurses too, and particularly the ward assistant who was so nice to me when I was sad, and a couple of patients I recognized too. From a medical perspective the follow up hospital trip was grim, but loved the connection!

Friendship At Its Purest

My Retiring Husband's Wish

My husband is retiring tomorrow. He asked his fellow employees at the high school where he works to donate to the school's scholarship fund instead of throwing him a party.  The scholarship fund helps graduates with small scholarships to help with expenses at college or trade school.

Right Where We Needed to Be

On a bench in the botanical garden, was a wallet and a piece of mail, forgotten there. LOST! ID was in the wallet, plus credit cards! The owner would be frantic once she discovered it was missing!

We brought the wallet to the nearest office and they said they would notify all the various branches in the gardens. Grateful we were there, right where we needed to be to find what was lost :)))).

*Peonies (Mother Esther's favorite) were in bloom as well as the Iris!

Endless Giving From Her Heart

She'd give you the shirt off her back .

I had admired this blouse that my friend Mindy had worn one day while she was here. I try not to admire anything she has because more often than not, she will give it to you.

After she left for home this morning I found her blouse on the bed, with a sweet coloring create! I am also finding little kindness creates scattered around our home, even found one when I opened the refrigerator!

Just One Call Away

In the next bed to me at the hospital is a lady who doesn't have a phone. I realized this yesterday when her daughter visited and I gave her my phone. She's just received a call on it now and is chatting to her grandchildren. :-)

I am so pleased I could offer something so simple that has afforded her such pleasure.

Blooms of Kindness

Today is Administrative Assistants' Day. So, I asked my students to bring one flower (or more) today and we'd make a bouquet for the office staff.

Looks like some students wanted to give more!

Harping Transitions And Peaceful Doves.

My little harp and I went to the nursing home today. Two of the people I played for were transitioning out of this world. One was alone except for staff coming in and out. She was not speaking and grasped at the air with her hands. I asked if she would like harp music, not expecting an answer. She did answer! She said: "Harp!" I took it as a command and played for the next 45 minutes. After a bit she stopped clutching at the air and visibly relaxed. By the time I left, one arm was draped peacefully off the side of the bed. The other woman was the jitterbug champ I have played for before. When I arrived at her room, I was informed as to the situation. Her daughter and the rest of the family needed to go out for a 1/2 hour and were very glad I ... Read Full Story >>

An image that helped him during WWII was tragically destroyed, until now

When my dad was a little child during WWII in Germany, a picture of a guarding angel hung over his bed. He had lost both his parents by the time he was 20, but he still had this picture, which by then was badly deteriorated. In his middle age, he brought it to a local artist to have it restored. The artist kept it for a year and eventually, my dad got upset and wanted it back. When he went to pick it up, the artist tore it into pieces in front of my dad saying that it's a worthless piece of paper because it was just a generic print on cardstock. Well, my dad's family was poor and it was from WWII when nobody had money, yet it was still valuable for my dad! After that, my parents kept the pieces in the back of a closet for many years. Last year ... Read Full Story >>

You Never Know What Others Go Through

Today I found out that the lady who runs my women's group, the group I'm having so very much fun with, is sleeping in her car because she has no money and felt that this was better than staying with her boyfriend.
I immediately offered that she can stay with us, although all I can offer is our sofa. She declined but I'll keep checking on her.

Magic Of Listening

One of my friends was facing hard issues regarding her work. She told me this and asked how she could find the way out of it. I really had nothing to show her about the way out. I could do nothing to
give her a solution because the problem she was facing was entirely different than I could help with.  I decided to do the least I could do. Just  listen to her and console her.

What I did certainly was really nothing to resolve her problem but the next time she met me she was very happy. I felt great to see her sunny face, and she said that she was grateful because she was capable of resolving her issue, but  just needed someone by her side who would listen to her.

I felt very happy that I could make her happy. Many times people don't need a hand, just the moral support which keeps them going, and it takes nothing. Really nothing out of us to give them that joy.
Keep smiling!

Someone Has To Be The First One To Show Kindness

A shipmate of mine took an interest in my paracord artwork, so I rigged his mug up much the same way I rope African djembe drums. Embellishing objects with decorative knotwork is a maritime tradition mostly practiced in the navy. I started doing it years ago with paracord because the stuff is so useful and comes in endless colors and patterns.

My shipmate is a gruff individual not known for his kindness, but I didn't let that stop me from spending a few days on his mug! People sometimes think that you shouldn't show kindness to someone who was never kind to you, but someone has to be the first to show a little love!

Dear Neighbors

The heart-opening impact of doing or witnessing small acts of kindness never ceases to astonish me. And the stories people tell about them are wonderfully contagious. Here is one that deeply touched hundreds of thousands of people this year, and moved me to write this post today. On January 20, 2017, a tweet came down my newsfeed that drew my attention because it had been liked and retweeted by an unusually large number of people, and the numbers were climbing by the minute. As of right now (May 21, 2017), that tweet has been liked by 514,000 people and been retweeted 173,000 times. It was written by Hend Amry who lives in Qatar. She describes herself as Lybian-American and her Twitter profile reads: "I am East and West, citizen and refugee. The melting pot is a failed paradigm, maybe more like a tossed salad. I am an international crouton." Hend, as I quickly ... Read Full Story >>

The Man on The Streets Picking Up Litter

It's no surprise that I'm passionate about picking up litter. I have shocked and shamed my family by picking up litter in evening wear and heels on a night out too!

However, yesterday, I saw a man with gloves and a big bag picking up litter in our street!! I thanked him heartily, and he didn't realize that it was Earth Day when he was doing this - an added bonus.

A Dignity Donation To Homeless Women

Many women in our community are struggling financially (some are homeless) and they can not afford the costs of hygiene products like pads and tampons and must often choose between buying food or those items for their monthly period.

Donations of purses, pads, tampons and other toiletries are being collected locally (Vancouver BC) at several locations across the city, and they will be given to shelters and women's organizations who will distribute them to women in need.

Today, I donated some new underwear and a large package of Kotex pads. I am fortunate enough to be able to afford these items, so I wanted to do my part to help women who can't afford them.

Let's help others when we can. It really does makes the world a better place.

She has a perky 'flower' name: Violet.  Us Flower Children, we stick together.

Spontaneously I then purchased 3 outfits for Mama Violet to choose from as she brings her newborn daughter home from the hospital.
