Stories of Kindness from Around the World

When The Universe asked me to, I listened.

My wife is amazing. We were on holidays a few weeks ago and took a train ride up the coast in Wales, UK. At one stop my darling wife had the urge to buy a bunch of flowers, for no reason at all other than the universe told her to do it.

At the next train station as we got off the train, we saw a young boy aged about eight, hugging his Dad tightly, tears streaming down his cheeks as his Dad was about to get on another train. The young boy's Mum was trying to keep it together as her husband left. As the Mum and son walked out of the station, my wife caught up with them and gave her the bunch of flowers, and that is when we discovered that her husband was a soldier and about to leave the UK for 6 months.

Moral of this story: the universe is a teacher we should all listen to. And of course to my amazing wife as well ;)

Your Family is My Family

The temple where I work at is involved in assisting a Syrian refugee family.  We have kind of adopted them.

Last Saturday I went with some others to their home and spent four hours visiting and connecting. I convinced my husband who is in the wholesale furniture business to get a couple of dealers of his to make a donation for the family. He was able to get  two things they really needed, one from each of two dealers--a bunk bed and mattresses.

We brought it over and put the bed together (which was a lot of work) and I felt so so so good that I'm still kind of high.  What Mitzvah! (Means commandment in the Jewish tradition but is often used to mean good deed). They were so appreciative and it was a joy for us! I surely received as much if not more than we gave. I look forward to connecting with them and helping where I can in the future.

Elevated Kindness in the Elevator

Todays thought is another simple observation and reflective gratitude. Every morning I take a lift 3 floors to get to my office and it is fascinating to notice the difference in energy some people bring. It is clear almost instantly who will be the talkers from even the slightest smile as they meet your gaze, and the elevator fills with their energy.

At this moment you have a choice and realize the power of a small act of reaching, engaging and offering a connection. I make a personal effort to engage with my elevator buddies, even the slightest small talk and guaranteed you will leave the elevator with an extra little spring in your step having made that one little personal connection.

It gets my day off to a positive start. It is after these good mornings that I realize how lucky I am to have majority of my colleagues willing to smile or have a laugh to brighten up my morning with a little extra human light.

A Big Lesson From A Little One

In the city I live in, we have a local national park full of trees. I'm thankful for that place, although I do I wish it was bigger. I was walking around and climbing by some tracks when I saw a beautiful tarantula crossing a path. I just stopped and decided to absorb myself in its walking nature and how big the world is for that entity. Behind me there was a family going up the same track and they also noticed the tarantula. Without doubting it, a kid shouted: - "Quickly dad, kill it." His brother also said that, encouraging their dad to kill the tarantula. Then I stopped their dad. - "Wait. This is the last place that the tarantula has to live in. Do you really want to kill it?" - "Well, it's dangerous and all and we have kids here..." - "Why not stand still and let it cross safely? Then you ... Read Full Story >>

Somewhere in the Dark Humanity Was Alive and Bright

In this world of chaos sometimes we come across someone who re-ignites our hope that not all has been lost. Humanity still exists in one form or the other.  Last night me and my friends went out for a party. The four of us had a great time together. We were having a great time but it was getting very late. Calls had started coming from home asking about our whereabouts. Delhi is very unsafe for women especially at night and parents are bound to be concerned about their daughter ‘s safety. Unfortunately our car broke down. The two boys in our group of four tried everything but the car didn’t budge. We girls were getting tense. The boys decided to hire an auto cab for us. We tried a lot but in vain. None of the auto drivers were ready to go to our destination citing reasons like they won’t get ... Read Full Story >>

Letting Go and Trusting in the Ripples

I just love the way life works. Take today for example ....

Today I posted a book to a friend abroad. A book I was very reluctant to let go off and give. It was one of my all time favourites, extremely rare, and one I wanted to keep. However I felt and knew that this book would serve this friend of mine deeply. So $13 later it was sent, on its way overseas.

Then just moments ago I came home and checked my own mail, and inside find a package addressed to me. I open it and inside. A book. This book.
Of all things. A book.

And of all the days for it to arrive it arrives today. The day I let go of and sent one of my own very beloved books.

The universe/God/life always provides. And will return to you whatever you let go of and give out of the goodness of your heart.

Today was a beautiful example of this 💞

A Good Reminder and A Change In Attitude

I work in a high stress environment and sometimes I can be on edge, have the wrong intentions and have a negative attitude. This week I was especially short with my coworker whom I sit next to. She can be degrading and often make others feel inadequate.

Although it was hard for me I didn't raise my voice or snap back, but simply had a calm conversation with her about whatever the issue was. We ended up talking about her adopted daughter and the stress she incurs daily. It was a good reminder for me that we are all working together to get through each day, and to do it with a positive attitude makes every ones day better.

A Slice of Kindness For His First Day On The Job

I ordered a pizza online and paid online. An opportunity for kindness presented itself. My mum opened the door and I could hear that the pizza guy was friendly etc. Mum told me it was his first day on the job. So I had an idea, I rang the pizza place and asked to speak to the manager.

I told the manager what a great job the new pizza guy did and said he was friendly. The manager was so surprised and I could hear that he was uplifted and he thanked me. I also said the pizza was lovely and thanked him. Can you imagine getting positive feedback on your first day of work? I'm so glad I saw this opportunity for kindness.

Who Was Being Kind To Whom?

Years ago, I was flying home from a business trip in Edmonton. I was seated beside a 7-year old child who was traveling alone between his divorced parents. I spent the entire trip entertaining him - but he was a sweet boy and it worked out nicely for both of us. But it wasn't an act of deliberate kindness on my part - I like kids and I like engaging them. Maybe the kindness was his, engaging with a strange lady on the plane even though he was bored and a bit scared.

Transformation of death to life

March 22, 2016 my husband received word that his brother passed away. It was his only sibling and my husband was the oldest. This was sad, however what emerged from his death was so inspiring for me. For the first time my husband and I met our nieces. They are both adults and my husband had never seen them (his brother divorced their mother many years ago). His oldest daughter shared with me that she had only seen her father 3 times in her entire life and she is 45 years old. That was also sad.  Through all the sadness I began to see kindness like I had never seen before. This daughter, who she also shared that he denied was his child when she was born, was the person who cleaned his home, who made all the arrangements for his cremation, who made sure that everything he left behind was taken ... A Beautiful Pack of Gratefulness

Last night on my way home, I dropped by a shop to buy some snacks for the office. I bought three packs of biscuits: one pack was particularly requested by our trainee, the other pack was something new for us to try and the third pack was my favorite.

On my way out of the store, I met the garbage collector who seemed to be just waiting for the store to close in order to do his job. Something deep inside prodded me to give my favorite biscuit pack to the man. So without hesitation I gave him my favorite pack and I was rewarded with a thank you given with the most beautiful and sincerest smile I ever had that day!

April RAOK showers bring May flowers

My daughter and I love doing this RAOK every April. It's a great opportunity for her to see kindness in action as well as the skepticism in our society. This year was similar to the others. Some people politely declined our drinks, but you could tell that many others were skeptical of "kindness with no strings attached."  I believe it's because it's so unusual in our society. "There's got to be a catch. They must be trying to sell me something or hand out religious materials." Some ignored us completely. But then, there are those experiences like the dad and his 5th-grade daughter today who stopped and got cold water.  They wanted to know what we were doing, why, and what prompted it.They stayed and wanted to hear our story. Then there was the tourist from Italy on his motorcycle who couldn't believe that we wouldn't take money in exchange for the drink. There was the ... Read Full Story >>

Compassion can heal

Made a decision this morning to reach out to my ex-brother-in-law. Divorce from my sister was a bitter one and she was left to raise two young children on her own. That was all many years ago and there has not been any contact to speak of. But sadly and very tragically, his brother quite suddenly transitioned last week. Have gotten a special card and will write him this afternoon. Regardless of what happened in the past, he has lost his brother and he is grieving.

Stealthy Doves

In appreciation for the upcoming teacher's week, I released some stealthy messenger doves today. Some had bookmarks from a trip I recently took, some had small gift cards for local lunch places, some had SMILE cards.

I like the challenge of no one seeing the random acts, and I like the feeling of being able to share a little of what I am fortunate to have. This week I also brought in some spring carnations for the secretary's desks and shared a salad I made with ingredients from my daughter's produce box. I like knowing that every time I make an effort to share, I'm sharing love with myself as well. Beautiful circles and ripples.

Going over and above

I had an important meeting to get to today but it was in Queens and I had no way to get there. My friend who is working part-time now offered to take me. She couldn't find parking so she waited in the car for almost an hour for me. So grateful for her kindness.

After it was over, I took her out to lunch to thank her. She took me home and then went to work. It was good catching up and spending some time with her.

Later in the day, I dropped by the church and donated a few things to their community table.

Good coffee, but even better smiles!

Yesterday I bought extra cups of coffee and gave them away to people entering my office space. I did not know them, one person has offices in the same space and two came for a training.

They all were surprised and taken aback. They all were gracious accepting the coffee and one later came to my desk to thank me again and to say she really needed the fresh coffee that morning. The smiles were fabulous. I now know where that office colleague's desk is and what her job is. I had fun.

Kind Acts All Around

What a day I had yesterday! First, a student walks into my classroom with an extra cup of Philz Coffee...just for me:). In truth, Philz messed up the order, so they just gave it to my students:). But the fact that
they thought of me was so very touching.

Then, toward the end of the day I receive four cookies in a package from our Teacher Appreciation Club...something I didn't even know existed! There was a kind note inside, too. So, in order to pay forward all the beautiful thoughts that I was receiving, I purchased a strangers meal at Chipotle:)

Finding What I Am Meant To Do

I went off to a nursing home this morning where I do hand massage and now neck and knee rubs. I so love doing this. It just allows me to connect with the elderly, and often lonely people. I think I get more out of it than they do.

I laugh, feel good, and feel wanted when I go there. I feel I have found what I am meant to be doing. While I was there, one of the staff members asked me to visit a certain lady, a very lonely, lovely lady who has no relatives and few friends. No one visits her.

Well ,I was a little unsure about how she would be -  but let me tell you, she is such a darling. We clicked right away and I felt I wanted her in my life. This upcoming week we are off to the garden center for lunch and a stroll. She is so excited about it and I am over the moon. Life is just so full of surprises. I love it.

For Me It Was More Than Just A Batch of Brownies

Recently one evening a pipe burst outside my front house. It was very damp, rainy, and cold outside and a bunch of workmen had to come out to fix it.

They were there several hours on a weeknight, when they could have been home with their families. So, I decided to bake a big batch of brownies and bring them outside to them, along with some coffee, to give them a lift. Needless to say, they looked happy. But I was happier!

Help is on the Way!

We recently had our house repainted on the inside. I noticed a change in our painter's demeanor and asked him if he was okay. He told me that he was suffering from a terrible tooth ache. I called a friend who is a dentist and she agreed to see him immediately. I am so grateful for her willingness to help! Thanks, Dr. Jill.
