52 Gifts For 52 Years

oday is my 52nd birthday and it just so happens that there are 52 students in the little school where I teach. So I was inspired to give a gift to each of the students in the school to celebrate that "52" connection. I took a brand new deck of playing cards and with some help from my daughter last night we made a playing card bookmark for every student in the school by adding a bead and a red ribbon to each card. Coincidentally I have 13 students in my class so they will each get one of the hearts. I can't wait to share these as part of my special day :)

Not Forgotten

esterday was the birthday of a college friend of mine who passed away ten years ago to liver cancer. I took a moment to write a letter to her sister reminding her that my friend was not forgotten and that she and I had enjoyed a wonderful friendship during our college years. Though her life was relatively short, I wanted her sister to know how much she had given to me and the legacy she left.

Beautiful Girl - Beautiful Father

family. "I try to really showcase the person for who they are and not the illness," she told The Huffington Post during a phone conversation Tuesday afternoon. Villatoro went to Jim and Grace's home for a shoot and offered to do one with their young daughter, Josie. After she left, she posted about the family on her website to get gift donations for the girl to help make her last birthday with her father a memorable one. But she decided to take the surprise one step further and dreamed up the idea of a wedding for the girl -- complete with flowers, desserts, a promise ring and a dress from L.A. Fashion Week -- so that her father could walk her down the aisle.” For today, appreciate those you love. Give them lots of hugs and be grateful they are in your life

Singing Kindness

oday, I went downtown to play music with my new singing friend. We sang songs we have not practiced, and though I was nervous, it felt so good, I kept singing. At the end, a woman who had been close, thanked me. She said her dad passed a few years back and today was his birthday. Every year on this day, she walks around open to whatever needs to happen. This time, she said, it was us. I did not realize I was being kind  to anyone. She told us, weepy eyed, that us sharing our voices was an amazing gift. She thanked me saying I had really given her something by choosing to sing for everyone to hear. I was just doing what I love! Thank you for this beautiful affirmation - I feel so gifted. This was everything I needed to hear.

Tuesday's Kindness Report

to the woman who lives under a bridge near her home. I didn't see the lady who would give it to her, but I have the bag ready-to-go in car for when I do meet up with her. Then, while running some errands, I chatted up with the clerks at Trader Joe's. It was nice to have some laughter and good conversation. After that, I swung by the bank. I had been to the bank about six weeks ago, on my birthday, and the new teller remembered and asked how my day had been. We ended up chatting about kindness, and I shared the KindSpring site with her. :) Next, at Whole Foods, I ended up getting into some nice conversations with several customers and clerks. Finally, when I arrived back at home, three neighbors were around and smiling wide, happy to see me. They stayed and chatted fo

Carnelian For Clarity

made a lovely pair of faceted carnelian earrings with 14k goldfill wire spirals and popped it into a mailer with a birthday card to mail it off to someone who will never ever expect it. She's a lovely young woman with much heart and strength. I gift my earrings constantly and donate them for fundraising auctions etc. My personal goal is to give a pair to every powerful wonderful beautiful woman I know.

A Celebration With A Cause

version of a celebration? Asking for donations of warm socks, hats. gloves, etc. and books. Why? Because she, along with friends (including me!) and family, traveledl to Cleveland OH where her daughter attends school at CSU. There we all met up and distributed the items to homeless folks near campus and the books, etc. to children in homeless shelters. I am so blessed to have been a part of this birthday "celebration" and look forward to helping many more times, in many more ways!

Gratitude Practice

can never repay my childhood friend who helped me pack after I had major strokes in the middle of moving two states away. She also bought food, cooked during that time. She was my first visitor in my new home. Her family took my husband out to celebrate his 70th birthday. This gratitude practice helps me remember these things and look at how I can pay this forward.

Seeing Someone. Paying Attention For A Change.

his was on Thursday. I was driving to visit my brother for his birthday and I had to stop and wait because the utility guys were blocking the road. As I waited this woman went walking past with a cane and looking sore and tired. So when I got to her I stopped and asked if she wanted a ride. "You don't know me"." Well ", I said. "I have been having to walk with a cane and if I had to go very far, I'd be sore and tired in a hurry. So, hop in and I will take where you need to go." She did and it was even on my way I was going. I'm glad I had to stop and wait. Gave me a chance to really SEE her. So I thank the. utility guys for the chance to be kind. And I had a great time with my brother when I got there too.

Everyday Stuff

Ice Cream Ripples

y son had received $10 as a birthday gift and last evening he used it to take his cousin out for ice cream. It turned out that these two kids were the last ones in the shop for the day, so the lady at the register who wanted to cash out quickly told them their ice cream was free! They were super excited. When I asked my son what he did with the money, he replied that he gave it to a homeless man.

Here's My Afternoon's Craft ...

ere's my afternoon's craft work. Inspired by Brindle's words of love and inspiration to others, and Mindy's beautiful bookmarks, I thought I could make cards. The birthday ones are being posted to my friend in California who gives them to old folks in a nursing home she supports. The others will be as the spirit guides me :-)

Such A Beautiful Stunning ...

uch a beautiful stunning pillow don't you think? On our way home from the zoo with the birthday boy I thought I would stop at a thrift store (second hand op shop). I told my son he could choose any thing he wanted. Naturally he chose a teddy bear. Whilst there I spotted this most fabulous cushion. I knew I had to buy it for my elderly friend Olga. Olga was asleep when we visited so I placed it on the end of her bed to see the moment she wakes. I hope it brightens her day ♥

Overhearing A Phone Conversation At Starbucks

the employees told her that the manager would be with her shortly. While we both waited her phone rang. She started apologizing to the person on the line, "I'm truly sorry, I lost my job a few months back and I could barely pay tuition. But I promise you as soon as I can I'll buy the girls their books. Please just give me time." I wanted to hug her right there and then. My birthday was the day before and I am obsessed with books. I got many bookstore gift cards. I knew why God put me there today. I thought of my mom and what she would say to me "come on you know what to do." I gave her $60 dollars worth in gift cards. I did hug her and told her she was in my prayers. Thank God for putting her in my path. I hope my friends who gave me the gift car

Melvin Off The Streets

This post is dedicated to my mother, whose birthday it is today, Jan 15th. She has held a lifelong practice of feeding needy people on her parents & children’s birthdays. What’s more inspiring to me is that she did it with so much humility that I never even learned that she was doing this until I was in my early 30s. I love you Mummy, and honor you by practicing the values you have lived by-- which have become my values.] I heard fervent mumbling beneath the blankets when I approached. “Melvin, are you under there?” He pops his head out and let’s out a slightly hysterical laugh. “Yah- yeah… I was just praying. Praying that somebody would bring me dinner.” That alone was enough to bring a knot to my throat. &l

A Sweet Gesture For A Sweet Tooth

am taking a piece of my husband's birthday cake to my dad. My father, known for his sweet tooth, always has dessert. I remember when he would take all his grandchildren out for breakfast and order them each a piece of their favorite pie for their breakfast dessert! I don't think our daughter ever quite understood why we didn't do that at home. :)

Foodbank "loonies"

HEW! Well it was a busy week and didn't have much time to be with my Kindness Kin...sure missed you guys! This weekend we are celebrating my daughter's 26th birthday ...I am so grateful for the day Maryn was born! She has taught me a lot about life and love. SO...at the beginning of the month I was inspired by one of our lovely members to contribute to the foodbank. I wanted to do this daily. Each morning I would drop a loonie (dollar) into this container. I was mindful to be grateful for the food I would eat that day. I also started the day thinking about being kind..kind of setting my intention. So I am off with my donation and hopefully will continue to do this all my days! Hope you had a wonderful weekend! XO

A Real Princess

hose of you who very kindly sent posts to my niece's little friend Elle might be interested in taking a look at this news item. Elle has cystic fibrosis and is hoping for a double lung transplant. She has had a very tough time, health wise, and your post have been  real boosts for her. Some months ago she wrote 10 wishes for her 10th birthday, and the campaign 'Elle's Wishes' was born. Mum's from the school, soon joined by the local community rallied together to make Elle's wishes come true. She has met celebrities and made a music video, but also raised money for cystic fibrosis research awareness and she was the 'face' of the UK organ transplant register for their Christmas campaign. One of Elle's wishes was to have a Princess Part

Right Place, Right Time!

her card in the machine and paid for their groceries. They tried to get her name to repay her, the lady said not to worry about it and told them to have a nice day.. She had no look of judgment,  just a smile and left the store. My friend and her family left - dumbfounded. Nothing like this had ever been done for them before. Two weeks later my friends took their little boy out for his birthday. They went to a nearby Mexican restaurant. After being seated, their waitress came up to their table.. It was the kind smiling lady who had paid for their groceries! They all had a big laugh, and for a tip? Yep - the amount of cash she paid for their groceries plus much more than her 20 percent, a new friend!

Persistence Paid Off

connection can be overpowering. The conversation turned to other parts of her life and it was so hard . This lady is keeping her family going with little financial help, husband in hospital ,most likely going to lose his leg, and she has to keep the farm and family intact. The strength of this woman astounded me. I asked her "how can I help you". She of course said I am fine and today is my birthday. So I said to her, "I want you to take this money and use it for whatever you want" She started to say no but i told her that she would be doing something lovely for me if accepted it. So she did. I think life can get hard sometimes but when you see people who are really having a tough time, you realize your life is pretty good. I am grateful everyday for the beau

Love You Always

It was totally tangled around another piece of jewelry. I thought I would never unravel it but I knew I had to, it was important to me. You see, this lovely gold heart locket was a precious gift from my then 13 year old daughter. She had thought long and hard about what she wanted to gift me for my birthday and she must have saved really hard for it too. She refused to let anyone else contribute to it, it had to be solely from her. It is a gold heart  locket which is inscribed 'Love you always' on the back. The little card which goes with it says ' To my beautiful mummy. Love you with all my heart! from Lauren xx' Such a thoughtful and loving girl. Inside contains two little really badly cut photos of her and I. Life with Lauren is very challenging sin

The Peach Lady Of Marseilles

oday I was reminded again how kindness spreads her soft, lingering perfume across the globe. My husband and I are in Marseilles this week as part of our journey to Provence for my birthday. In this vibrant city which is a melting pot of hues, smells and sounds, I had a short and sweet encounter with one of the residents. At a marketplace in town, I saw an unfamiliar peach variety that is not available in my country. I decided to buy only one peach to find out what it tastes like. A Muslim woman, Feiza, who was also in the shop, then came forward and insisted on gifting me four of those strange, flat peaches! Feiza's unexpected kindness was a magical moment in our day. While police walk around in crowded tourist spots to protect people against possible harm, a local women

He Was There For Her When No One Else Was

have never had a birthday party before, so at this "ripe-old" age, I decided to throw one for myself. Approximately 20 people confirmed that they were coming. I don't have a lot of money but splurged in the $1 store to buy decorations, plates. I had a tiny budget in order to feed all of them. I sat, I waited, I pondered, and, although all of my "friends" said they were coming, no one showed up! The celebration was supposed to start at 12 noon. Here it was, 4:00pm, and still, no one was here. The expensive cake was melting, the food on the BBQ was burnt beyond recognition. I tried, really hard, not to cry. I decided to sit out back, reflect on the wonderful things that I did have, and read "Chicken Soup." All of a sudden, I heard a screech and

No Christmas Cards

out of the car park I saw a young boy probably about 12 years of age on the other side of the road.  He was alone and as he was walking he was sobbing and holding his right hand side. I thought some bigger boys had perhaps bullied him and he was in pain. I had to go to his aid and see if I could help with his distress. He told me that his big sister who was a nurse had bought him a combined birthday/Christmas present. It was a mobile phone, I would say it was his first mobile phone. He had been allowed to use it and only had it days when he dropped it and cracked the screen!  That's why he was clutching his upper right hand side of his body, his mobile phone was in the upper right hand pocket of his coat. The little guy was devastated, tears rolling d

Travis Randolph Eating Lunch With My Son!

have a child starting middle school, I have feelings of anxiety for him, and they can be overwhelming if I let them. Sometimes I'm grateful for his autism. That may sound like a terrible thing to say, but in some ways I think, I hope, it shields him. He doesn't seem to notice when people stare at him when he flaps his hands. He doesn't seem to notice that he doesn't get invited to birthday parties anymore. And he doesn't seem to mind if he eats lunch alone. It's one of my daily questions for him. Was there a time today you felt sad? Who did you eat lunch with today? Sometimes the answer is a classmate, but most days it's nobody. Those are the days I feel sad for him, but he doesn't seem to mind. He is a super sweet child, who always has a smile and hu

A Mother's Surprise Response To An Act Of Kindness At

went to the dollar store to get some balloons and some wrapping paper to wrap a present for my daughter's 27th birthday. I went to stand in line and saw a lady trying to get her kids to come to the register, rushing them as they were taking their sweet time picking out whatever they were getting. I offered to let her go before me, but she politely declined. She tried again to get her 3 or 4 children to get a move on. I could hear the frustration in her voice. As I was paying for my items I asked the cashier if she could hold my balloons for a second. Then heard the sigh of the lady as I guess she thought I was taking too long. What she didn't realize is that I asked the cashier to hold the balloons for me so I could get a $20 bill out for her. I turned to her (all her
